Complete bathroom and closet remodel with very challenging structural issues, due to the fact that the bathroom was almost completely cantilevered off the third story of the house. This project was a gut renovation of a loft on Park Ave. South in Manhattan – it’s the personal residence of Andrew Petronio, partner at KA Design Group. Bilotta Senior Designer, Jeff Eakley, has worked with KA Design for 20 years. When it was time for Andrew to do his own kitchen, working with Jeff was a natural choice to bring it to life. Andrew wanted a modern, industrial, European-inspired aesthetic throughout his NYC loft. The allotted kitchen space wasn’t very big; it had to be designed in such a way that it was compact, yet functional, to allow for both plenty of storage and dining. Having an island look out over the living room would be too heavy in the space; instead they opted for a bar height table and added a second tier of cabinets for extra storage above the walls, accessible from the black-lacquer rolling library ladder. The dark finishes were selected to separate the kitchen from the rest of the vibrant, art-filled living area – a mix of dark textured wood and a contrasting smooth metal, all custom-made in Bilotta Collection Cabinetry. The base cabinets and refrigerator section are a horizontal-grained rift cut white oak with an Ebony stain and a wire-brushed finish. The wall cabinets are the focal point – stainless steel with a dark patina that brings out black and gold hues, picked up again in the blackened, brushed gold decorative hardware from H. Theophile. The countertops by Eastern Stone are a smooth Black Absolute; the backsplash is a black textured limestone from Artistic Tile that mimics the finish of the base cabinets. The far corner is all mirrored, elongating the room. They opted for the all black Bertazzoni range and wood appliance panels for a clean, uninterrupted run of cabinets. We designed and built this beautiful home office for our client who wanted the room to look amazing and function really well. Maria had a lot of books as well a some pieces that she wanted to display so getting the most out of the wall space was very important. We built this rolling ladder so that she would reach every inch of space. We custom built and finished it with our custom special walnut beachy color and it turned out great. We also built a two person desk so that Maria could meet with her clients.

Dual built-in wall units. The left side has base cabinets for general storage, triangular shelves on the end for knick knacks, and fully adjustable bookshelves above. The right side has fully adjustable shelves for the clients vast DVD collection. A red oak rolling library ladder gives the client full access to the entire height of each unit.

We reconfigured the massive bookshelf with retrofitted reclaimed wood shelves at the bottom, added a rolling library ladder, and complemented the shelves with a barn door made of the same reclaimed wood. The look was more rustic in the den and master bedroom beyond. Photo by Gregg Krogstad

Design Dilemma: Our clients needed a place to store their beautiful bass and their extensive collection of books and records. Solution - We transformed this unused corner in the great room into a beautiful and functional storage space. Using a subtle instrument rack so the client could easily remove the bass to play, we were able to showcase the bass as a work of art and make it a focal point in the space.
