hi there - who makes the light fixtures for the mirrored bulbs?
  • ski4life

You can get similar light fixtures at most hardware stores for < $2. Chrome tip bulbs are simple to find as well.

upholstered fabric covered panels can be hung just slightly below the beams for a really cool hip look. I see it done all the time in commercial building where all the ducts and wiring is exposed above. Especially in restaurants. It helps hide the framework which can be unsightly as well as add a sound barrier and help with insulation.

Do you have carpeting with thick padding on the floor above to absorb sound?

    Thank you!

Emily, I just purchased a box of the "half chromes" from Amazon. I'm pretty sure there is still plenty to be had

Beautiful! What lights are you using on the beams?

What color did you use for the ceiling?

Do you know if building code considers the height between joists in an application with exposed joists like this, or do they look at the height to the underside of the joists? We have a basement that is slightly less than the 7' minimum and I was thinking leaving the joists exposed could potentially help us meet the code.

  • davidneham

Curious about above as well. Did you get an answer somewhere else mt1652? Our ceiling is 6'-10" at the underside of the joists, but 7'-6" to the underside of the subfloor.

We had the ceiling sprayed by our painters. One of the keys to making this work is cleaning and sanding the years of built-up grime from the sub-floor and joists. This is a relatively labor intensive process. Thanks for your inquiry.

Hi, can you tell me where the pipes are? We would like to do this, but we have pipes...

Sound transmission is important between spaces. In this project our client's did not require any sound dampening, so there is none. To achieve some form of sound proofing, the appearance would need to be modified or insulation added above what is seen in the image. Thank you for your interest in our work.

The wood is horizontal birch plywood that has been cut down to 1x3 dimensions. It's warm light color adds to the modern feel of the space without making it too stark. Thank your for your interest in our work.

The couch really adds to the colorful touch to the room, especially when it's set against the white walls. Unfortunately, the Owner's had the couch in their possession prior to the renovation and we don't have any of the details for this item. Good luck in your search and thanks for your interest.

Electric heat mats are a great way to add heating to a space without taking up a lot of room with bulky heaters. To answer your question, you should expect to loose anywhere between 1/2" to 1 1/4" depending on the material used. Please remember that you need 7'-0" ceiling heights in most jurisdictions for habitable space. Thanks for your inquiry.

The open joists really accentuate the head height in a low space. We were able to achieve this open look because we are a single family dwelling. Thanks for your inquiry.

One of the simplest way to warm your existing concrete floors is to cover them with ceramic tile over an electric heat mat. You will probably want to level the floor anyhow since most garage floors slope. Hope that helps.

    Hi masnis,
It's furniture that was already owned by our client; we don't have that information.

In a basement it’s common to lower the ceiling and install recessed can lights. For a more modern touch, and to make the space feel airier, consider peeling back the ceiling in places and running track lights along the exposed joists.

1. Colonial Upstairs, Scandinavian DownstairsThis basement renovation gave a family a multipurpose space where they could all spend time together playing, watching TV and using a home office. It also gave them a chance to break away from the colonial decor used throughout the rest of the house and enjoy another style they admired: Scandinavian modern.

Cathy Lara added this to A Gloomy Basement Lightens UpAug 8, 2012

"There are two young children in the house, so the basement is used as a playroom for the kids, a TV and media room for the adults and a lounge that feels more modern and cozy," says Wentworth.
