We are moving into our forever house so I am not thinking of resale for a change! I notice that you have a gold tone chandelier where most young people use the oil rubbed bronze or black. The house we are moving into has a beautiful very expensive lantern (in style) type shiny brass chandelier in the foyer. I noticed that brass is back in. This is a very high end one with detail work around the top and bottom. Do you think it will date the house if I leave it? It has another smaller flush not as pretty light right near the door. I am going to change all the doorknobs from brass to tone it down. I also have Henkel Harris, Baker and Stickley furniture with brass hardware. Do I need to change those too? I really appreciate any opinions! Thank you

It looks more gold-toned to me than brass. If it is indeed brass, there must be a way to dull it out so it looks gold-toned. I agree that you should have what you like, number one! I wouldn't put too much $ and energy into changing out the brass/gold finishes. Also, it's perfectly fine to mix metals. As my favorite designer used to say, once you decorate, furnish, establish a color scheme and mood, those things tend to 'dissappear.'

Thanks geo55..The picture you are seeing is from the Houzz site..My chandelier is a shiny brass but very high quality with embossing around the top and bottom of the round lantern. I'm going to work on trying to get that picture to post...

This is lovely. I do have a question about the wood floors. The wood was in the river? Did this affect the color? Reason I am asking my husband sawed pine for our flooring for our new house. It is heart of pine. I would like to achieve this color for our flooring. Did the oil finish have a color in it? I apologize in advance if this is confusing.

My foyer is a dark green marble and the wood floors on the first floor are 'Golden Oak'. What do you think of staining the treads and upper wood hallway a darker color? The handrail is a dark mahogany color.

Beautiful stairs. We have a long run of 12 steps on a straight stair - case as well but our railing company is insisting on a post midway down to prevent flex in the wood handrail. Can you tell me how this railing was achieved without using the extra post. My spindles are going to be similar to these as well. Specific information for how this railing was done would be greatly appreciated.

Great inspiration, it is a beautiful staircase! The best way to make sure you have no flex in the railing is to have each baluster (spindle) bolted to the stair treads. A good quality stair company will do this without you having to ask for it. Good luck!

Im about to redo our handrail and paint spindles- love this look. Do I stain or paint black? Is there a gloss? What do I tell my contractor to achieve this look? Also, i have young kids and I'm afraid they will rub off the new coat of paint on the spindles how do you keep the paint from chipping? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

i have darkwood flooring on main rooms but staircase is a lighter tone - with white handpickets, based on this picture it seems possible that I can tie the colours by using a darker stain for handrail. what would you recommend? thx!

Hello,
What you see in this photo is exactly what I would do, especially with a light colored wall as you see here. The dark 'line' helps to move your eye through the space, leading you in -like a ribbon or a bold line.
Hope I've answered your question-

Baseboard/Trim - It looks like you have a large white baseboard with a thinner wood edge? How did you attain this look? Is this painted brown?

In our area of the country, typical base boards are 10" high, with a small molding (of personal choice) on the top. The 1/2 round molding on the bottom is called shoe molding. It is there as a cover gaps as the wood floor meets the baseboards and also as a buffer to the painted base boards. I prefer to stain (not paint) these the same as the floors so they themselves will not be chipped during cleaning...

Are these baseboards 10" high with the small top molding? Are the 3 pieces moldings and baseboard all made of wood? Where can I find this exact set up?

Generally trim and doors are touched a lot. I recommend a gloss finish even if it is not a high gloss for easy wiping of fingerprints.

Hello-This is a glossy black paint. It’s my standard ‘go to’ to emphasize a dramatic stair case as this.
Thank you for your question and interest in my work!

Hello-and thank you for your question.
The lovely foyer table was purchased through a trade dealer. The owners retired right after I purchased this for my clients. The company no longer exists.

Thank you. It is lyrical! It's available in one finish-antique brass, and 2 sizes. This is the large one. I have the smaller one in my foyer. Love it! Those are matching sconces on the stair wall. The company is Corbett. Find it at your better lighting centers.

Entryway vs. living room color - Hi, My entryway is about 7' wide and 17' long with solid wall on either side. The living room is one step down. Would you advise painting the entry walls a shade or two lighter than the khaki-like color I am painting the living room walls to give a nice contrast? Also, upon entering the entryway, the staircase begins immediately to the right. Which color should be continued up, or another color? Please help. It is a condo. The entryway is dark but the living room has two French Doors to the patio and has a fair amount of light. THank you so much for your time.

I love the color of your front door (on a different post about front door paint) and have been thinking of doing something similar. Our colonial house is white with black trim and I want to paint the door Benjamin Moore Mill Springs Blue. What brand and color name is yours? Also I can't seem to find an answer to this question: should I also paint the frame of the storm door?

What Houzz contributors are saying:

KitchenLab | Rebekah Zaveloff Interiors added this to How to Update a Traditional Staircase
Even if your tastes lean towards the classic, you can still make your staircase feel more updated and contemporary by adding a bit of black. As you can see, the wood floors in a home often set the palette; they're the majority of surface area in any home. Adding contrast with a black railing helps this space from being muddy and all one color.
Shawn Gauthier added this to How to Light Your Home Right
Your entryway is likely the first impression visitors experience of your home, so be sure it’s appropriately lit. If you have high ceilings, like this home, recessed lighting won’t be enough since the bulbs are nearly a story away. Include an additional light fixture like a chandelier or pendant lights to further brighten the area.
