That is an absolutely gorgeous stair!

Regarding slipping - hardwood stairs uncovered by carpet are standard in the Nordics. (I don't want to think about how easily would carpeted stairs get filthy!) Never had a problem with slipping, but we do have building standards that require a sturdy handrail, and we tend to walk indoors barefoot (shoes are removed at the entrance). My SO whose fit get colder easier wears a pair of house slippers with proper soles, and doesn't have problems either.
