Is soapstone durable? Is it currently popular?

It's not as popular as granite (which may have gotten a little too popular), but it is definitely popular, especially for people who prefer the matte finish to polished granite. It's a great surface for kitchen counters as it is impervious to heat and chemicals (soapstone was often used in science labs for this reason). It also, unlike granite, doesn't need to be sealed. The stone is not as hard as granite so it can scratch, but the scratches just blend into the patina, especially after oiling or waxing, and if you really don't like a scratch you can lightly sand it and oil it and it disappears. For the first year soapstone counters are usually oiled or waxed with some frequency (I did mine about once every month or two for the first year, but now, in the second year, I only wax mine every six months or so, and eventually you don't really need to wax them at all). We've been extremely happy with ours, and love its beautiful veining.
