The small red leaved tree belongs to the diverse family of Japanese maple trees. It distinguishes itself from the regular larger leaved Japanese maples through finely divided leaves. Its name is: Acer palmatum var. dissectum atropurpureum.

One of the better-known Japanese Maples with a more shrub like appearance. It is an excellent slow growing specimen for even the smallest garden. Shown adult plant in this picture, has been opened up to walk under. Technically a spreading miniature tree, produces wonderful green leaves that have up to 11 lobes, each with serrations and the tree itself will get no higher than 6 feet with a spread of up to 9 feet. Its season of interest is autumn when the green leaves turn an almighty deep shade of purple-red. Good for growing in a large pot or as a small focal point. Prefers acid soil, sun (partial shade), Frost hardy up to 5 degree Fahrenheit
