    That "orange" part of the wall is likely a high-density stratified timber material. The most common brand is called Parklex. Just Google Parklex for more information. They make architectural wood panels for exteriors, often very modern kinds of finishes like this set up, but often times across entire large buildings.

Sometimes the void is the perfect problem solver in a garden design. This enclosed courtyard could have been dark and oppressive, but because there are few mass features — even the planting is very light — it feels light and open.
