Lucy-you inspired me! I used that color on a coffee table after seeing this picture! Do you know how many coats it required? Mine is still looking a bit "pink"! Thanks :)

Hi this was a fabulous old pine cupboard original to the house and we repurposed with a splash of coral enamel and relocated it from the kitchen to the lower level to use as a bar. Don't you love it! A cabinet maker could make this for you as well. Have fun! Lucy

9. Yes, cabinetry is a significant expense and one of the highest-ticket items of a kitchen renovation, but paint is only paint. It can be changed relatively easily and affordably and can lend much-needed personality to rooms that tend to be rife with safe resale-minded tile and finish selections.

Bright orange is taking bold color to the extreme, but it’s absolutely wonderful here. Lucy Penfield of Lucy Interior Design shares the specifics. “This was a fabulous old pine cupboard original to the house. 5. All-white woodwork. Where is it written that all woodwork must be painted white? Why break this habit? Because a bit of color is a good thing. It is surprising and unexpected. Frankly, it just adds interest and personality. Just notice how fantastic this tomato-red cabinet looks.

8. Or suggest warmth with a blazing-hot hue. Paint a coat of vibrant red on your china hutch, buffet or chairs — try wine or tomato red for a classic look, salmon if you're brave.

9. Jazz up case goods with new hardware. Give an old sideboard or hutch a minifacelift by changing up the knobs and pulls. Tip: If you have leftover wall paint, consider painting a freestanding shelf or a china cabinet the same color to give it a built-in look.

The combination of pretty pewter and sleek glass knobs on this piece is perfect.

However, crystal can make equal impact in smaller (and more affordable) doses when applied to the right spots. Dress up your cabinetry by replacing your hardware with crystal options. Mix and match with noncrystal pieces for an eclectic flair.

The basement had only southern- and western-facing windows, so natural light was limited. Penfield made every color stand out and enhanced each little bit of light by painting all the walls and trim in Benjamin Moore's Super White. Paint color on built-in: Dark Salmon, Benjamin Moore
