Try lighter walls with a dark ceiling, hang ceiling sconces for bedside lights to keep nightstand surface free for books or glasses and small floating nightstands to make the floor space feel larger.

Hello, as I am the photographer and writer of this project, I am unfortunately unable to answer your question. It looks to me, however, that they are oak floorboards with a slight whitewash, and were nailed down. Hope this helps! Holly

Black or White?Black frames aren’t always the way to go, however. The Drafting Studio building designer Paul Caracoglia says black frames can look out of place in a light and airy space where white is the predominant color. White frames work best for the windows in this light-filled open-plan kitchen-dining area, for example, but black has been used effectively on the verriere separating the more traditional main house from the contemporary addition.

Framing a view is a great way to add interest. In this photo, there's a richer experience of the room knowing that a steel-framed doorway contrasts all of the wood.Tips: For architectural shots, make sure the walls and doors are straight up and down; it makes the photo look more graphic and professional.

Clutter is the archnemesis of feng shui. Air and energy should always be moving, and clutter is like a stop sign to energy, trapping it and keeping you stuck in the past.A professional organizer can help you declutter (and de-stress)In some Asian cultures, spring cleaning is done three days before the Asian New Year’s Day, symbolizing the sweeping out of any misfortune or traces of bad luck. People in the cultures don’t sweep again until after the new year, so they can collect the good-luck dust into a corner of their home.Throw out any broken objects, replace blown lightbulbs and be ruthless with items that you haven’t used or worn in the last 12 months. When you have finished cleaning, wash your hands under running water for at least three minutes. This washes away all the bad energy that got on your hands in the process.

Heavy black steel doors handmade by Dutch fencing manufacturer Mosterd Sierhekken greet visitors. The doors help give the home that sense of character that Marielle loves and are Weerdenburg's favorite part of the open-plan design. The couple previously lived in a very old, historical home. They needed to upgrade to give their growing family more room, but Marielle didn't want to compromise too much on character when it came to the design.
