Preciado's loft flows with openness. The huge windows and high ceilings keep it well lit, with an airy feel. "I spend a lot of time in the hammock," she says. "It's a huge hit with my friends' kids, and the trapeze bar is great for stretching." The leather sofa is vintage from the 1960s, and the leaning ladder was picked up from a warehouse.Rug: Cow Hides International; bookshelf: Rakks; poufs: leather, Dosa; hammered metal tables: Dar Gitane

Industrial and Organic in BrooklynAlthough it was built in the 1890s, this Brooklyn, New York, loft still has its original windows, whitewashed walls and exposed ductwork. An eclectic furniture collection and a working wood-burning stove keep the industrial space from looking and feeling cold — particularly important during New York's snowy winters. The homeowner especially loves her comfy hammock hanging next to the sofa. The trapeze bar hanging right above it is a favorite with visiting kids. See more of this loft

Brooklyn, New York. Designer and artist Alina Preciado’s industrial-style loft is in an 1890s building that was once a woodshop. She says, “It had huge machines which made divots and scratches along the floors, so it’s great to be able to see the history.”See more of this home
