        5. An Upper East Side Studio Does the ShiftWhat Jacqueline Clair’s apartment on New York’s Upper East Side lacks in size, it makes up for in stylish whimsy and clever design. She chose a clear chair to provide more seating without overwhelming the 350-square-foot space. Chic wall art draws the eye upward, making the room feel larger.Clair also crafted micro zones to make the studio feel less like a bowling alley. At the suggestion of interior designer Darlene Weir, she shifted the position of her desk 90 degrees to help delineate the bedroom. A well-placed bookshelf full of bright decor completes the illusion of separate spaces. Read more about this studio

        12. Make your house yours. Whether it’s rearranging things in the house or remodeling it, remember that it’s your house and you’re the one who will be living in it. After years of considering your other family members’ needs, now’s the time to make your home yours. “A tidy, organized home had been my fantasy whilst the kids were growing up,” says Bronwyn Rouse. “In those precious moments to myself, I would daydream of my dream home where you could open a cupboard without having to slide your hand in first to hold the contents from spilling out. Where you could have a white sofa!”

Creating boundaries for a small living room, bedroom and workspace in an open studio floor plan was Clair’s first design challenge. “One of my major design dilemmas when I first moved in was that the furniture on the TV wall was all in a row — it just looked like three pieces, all lined up awkwardly,” she says. Clair tapped the help of interior designer Darlene Weir, who offered design advice online. “She suggested that I turn the desk so that, instead of laying flush against the wall, it jutted out, which made a huge difference and looks much better,” says Clair.
