I think that is a really great idea. I love the way that you painted the door red on the outside. It really makes your house stand out so much, and adds a really fun touch. What is the door made out of? http://www.shopthedoorstore.com/replacement-windows-doors-downers-grove-il.html

Thanks, Talmadge. The door is fir, which is also beautiful if left natural.

Is it odd to have the entry to a bathroom on a wall that faces the back door entry to a house. We are thinking of moving the bathroom entry due to a kitchen remodel. there is a small open entry area into the house attached to the kitchen but the bathroom door would be across the entrance on the facing wall. I am concerned it would be an issue but I am not sure.

I've always been of the opinion that the door to a bathroom or powder room shouldn't be visible from any entry into the house. It's just never the view one wants from an exterior doorway. Sometimes it's a tough nut to crack but just keep noodling some sketches until you do.

You didn't say what room would be the alternate for the bathroom door to open into. I the back entry is just the best place for the bathroom, be sure to put bomber hinges (spring hinge) on the door so it automatically pulls itself together. That way you and others won't see inside the bathroom if someone doesn't think to close the door.

Hi Allison,

This was a fir door, six panel. I'm afraid I don't have the brand, but Lemieux would have the same door.

Hi Mary,

The steps are granite - beautiful, but it can ice up, as do most exterior surface materials. Keeping granite clear of snow and adding ice-melt or salt to keep the ice at bay is useful for this, or for bluestone, wood, or whatever your steps are made of. Neither ice-melt nor salt will damage the stone.

Thanks, glad you like it. The tall window is at the staircase. There's a photo from the rear called "New family room, kitchen, and renovations to existing house", and other photos in "Lincoln kitchen/family room addition". The house was also featured in a piece on Houzz by Mary Prince.

Walkway material and porch dimensions? - Awesome curb appeal! We are in the process of redoing our walkway and adding a porch. I was wondering what material was used for the walkway? Is it just white concrete and the lighting in the picture is giving it that hue? Also do you know the dimensions for the porch? It is perfect! Great work. Lovely home.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Becky Harris added this to True Blood: What If Sookie Stackhouse Just Moved Away?
Sookie should probably have a red front door. Vampires have to have permission from humans to come inside, and this will set out a subtle signal that she's interested.
Vanessa Brunner added this to Houzz Planning: How to Choose a Front Door
It’s amazing the difference the front door can make in the appearance of a home’s facade. A splash of red-orange on the exterior door adds a vibrant touch to a traditional exterior.Boost your curb appeal and make your front entry pop with a custom front door
Bud Dietrich, AIA added this to The Colonial, America's Home Style
Not quite symmetrical, with simple "less is more" detailing, here is a contemporary interpretation of colonial design, with a welcoming red front door.
Becky Harris added this to Fresh Start: Paint the Front Door
A red door lets visitors know they are in for a treat when they step inside this home.

3. Power wash paths and siding. Giving your home's exterior and paved areas a power wash can be nearly as dramatic as repainting, for a much lower cost. Rent a machine from your local hardware store if you don't have one.4. Maintain green lawns. Sad, neglected lawns are a major turnoff to potential buyers. Maintaining a healthy lawn from the beginning with regular care is the least expensive route, though laying new sod can be worth the dramatic improvement in curb appeal if you don't have time to start from seed.
Becky Harris added this to Curb Appeal Feeling a Little Off? Some Questions to Consider
Is the front door the right color? If your front facade feels ho-hum, a new front door color can rev it up. Not sure which color will suit your home? We have a number of helpful ideabooks featuring a range of front door color choices and how to pick them; Vanessa Brunner has conveniently put them together in one place for you.
Eco+Historical, Inc. added this to How to Update a Traditional Exterior With Color
Fun door colors can also give a traditional exterior a bit of modern zing, for just the cost of a quart of paint.Paint picks: 5 Bright Palettes for Front Doors
Liz Miller Interiors added this to Put On a Good Face: Design Principles for Home Fronts
If you don’t have such a classically proportioned home, adding a portico and perhaps modifying some adjacent windows, as in this example, can give a sense of depth to an otherwise flat facade. The red door once again helps to establish that point of destination and provides one more layer of depth.
