We have honed white granite counter tops that were sealed immediately after installation. We have had zero issues with staining or etching! We spilled red wine on it and even left tomato sauce overnight! It cleans up like new!!

Thank you! You can get lucky and find a big enough island sometimes, or order a larger slab. If you use a good fabricator they should be able to do a discreet seam.
  • centaurita
Thank you for answering my last question! I'm getting ready to order my slab and am getting conflicting info. Do you remember how much overhang you had and if extra support was needed? Or did you use an apron for aesthetics only? I appreciate your insight -thank you.

Masterpiece lighting comes to mind, but they sometimes go a little overboard with the amount of lights they spec.

If you're searching for white granite, try looking at "quartzite." It's a completely natural material (to be distinguished from man made "quartz") that is as durable as granite, but tends to look more like white marbles (Super White Quartzite and White Macaubas Quartzite) and sometimes even like onyx (Taj Mahal Quartzite) http://www.houzz.com/projects/107781/White-Macaubas-Quartzite-in-NW-DC

We are building a house and chose Kashmir White as our counter top. We have stained black island, maple glazed cabinets and love this backsplash. We are however installing a pot filler. Do you have any suggestions on how to do so? Not sure if we could install it with the wide plank backsplash, or do we need some sort of stone behind the cooktop.
    Thanks again,

You should be able to install the pot filler on the planks without any problem. Stone would be more durable though...

I did not build it, I just designed it. It was built on site by the trim carpenter. Most any good trim carpenter should be able to build one for you. Good luck!

Do you have the model of the vent a hood inset that was used? Also are ceilings 9'4" or 10'? Should it sit 30" above range? Thanks for the help

  • kseeger

I would love to know this too as we are designing an island that is 9.5 ft width by 4.5 ft deep and having a hard time making sure the posts are the right size. Not to big not to small. I like yours! Are you thinking 4x4 is close?

It is a honed finish, and the edge is mitered at a 45 degree angle to create a ticker looking slab.

Thank you! It is really up to the owner... In this kitchen we did end up adding decorative fixtures after the photos were taken in order to create a little separation between the kitchen and family room. You do not need them if you have enough can lights, but it is an easy way to add detail to a space if you feel you need it. I will sometimes not do hanging fixtures but instead do lamps on the island...

I am guessing, but I have lots of experience in kitchens, and I think that wall is:
    24" + 30" + 36" + 30" + 24" = 144" so 12' of cabinets
  • PRO
    Castro Design Studio
The total length of the wall is about 28', with about 17 feet of cabinets.

The slab is supported by the island itself. Under the island the floor joists were doubled for additional structural support.

There is no seam in the island. You can order oversized slabs from some vendors if you are concerned about yours.

It is very difficult to say without seeing the space and the marble slab itself. There are many factors that determine the way a color will look in the space. I recommend you speak to a design professional in your area.

The ceiling is flat, and I believe everything else is "eggshell". Paint is very tricky, and will vary a lot depending on your lighting. I recommend you experiment with different shades and finishes on site to determine what works best for you.

The island is 6' x 10'. We were able to source an over sized slab, so it does not have a seam. If you are unable to get an over sized slab you can get a seam that is almost invisible if you have a good installer, and good matching slabs.

In an all-white kitchen, a warm wood hood becomes the centerpiece.

Consider going extra wide. If you’ve got a big kitchen, don’t be afraid to go for a big island, especially if it will be used for both cooking and entertaining. There’s rarely too much counter space. (Just be sure you can reach what you need from the cooking zone.)
