This nighttime perspective looks toward the house, showcasing the softly lit dining area beneath the custom white pergola. The modern outdoor kitchen with its sleek concrete countertop is visible, framed by the custom-designed horizontal screening fence. The privacy screen behind the kitchen adds an elegant layer of seclusion, completing this inviting and sophisticated backyard setting.

Client requested additional landscaping, a firepit, seating area, and pergola for existing porch to extend the living space as they had family over often and needed a updated outdoor space. A 2D drawing was created showing the layout of the seating area, pergola, and planting beds. The legend on the plan shows the plant selection so the client can confirm they are satisfied with all the plants and locations. The pergola was fashioned from rough cut cedar and held together with Simpson Strong Tie decorative powder coated hardware and stained to give it a warmer feel that fit the space. The seating area and fire pit was designed to reach out into the yard towards the forested area per the clients request and create a space for family gatherings to enjoy even on colder nights. Landscape lighting was added around the seating area and cafe lights were strung on the pergola to allow for the space to be enjoyed at night. Flowerbeds were added around the existing patio and seating area to soften the hardscape areas. The side of the house served as a deer trail through the area down to the creek behind the house so care was needed to select deer resistant plantings for the design.

With a panoramic view across the San Francisco Bay, from San Jose to the Golden Gate Bridge, Pitcher’s Prow, a landscape for a professional baseball player, emerges prow-like from a hillside site in Oakland, California. Nestled against the existing house, a plunge pool and upper and lower seating and entertainment terraces cascade downward as a series of concrete and cedar planes. A steel pergola pinwheels its cantilevered triangular arms outward to shade the built-in grilling and upper seating area at the top of the site.

Custom stone paver garden planter beds add a touch of natural beauty and serve as functional spaces for gardening, allowing you to grow your favorite plants, herbs, or flowers and creating a source of tranquility.

We began this project by tiling their existing patio with natural Rustica slate. A sand finish concrete extension to the patio was created to provide a new location for outdoor family dining. A pergola was designed to add shade and create a sense of enclosure to the dining area. Decorative cedar and steel screens were employed to create privacy to the spaces. Plantings included Clematis vines and Stella d Oro Daylilies.
