What Houzz contributors are saying:
Kilim motifs aren’t just decorative; they bear meaning. Some are symbols of motherhood and fertility. Others express a tribal weaver’s desire to protect family from wild wolves. Some share symbols of hope and promise. You can take to the web to find out what the motifs on your vintage find mean.
Make a reading spot. In a small home, every little area counts. An armchair paired with a lamp can result in a favorite reading place.
Clear as mud? Here's the takeaway: The flat weave makes kilims light yet hardy so they can withstand foot traffic better than a traditional carpet. And because they're simpler to make, their cost has historically been lower, though that's changing as kilims rise in popularity.
Almost all the unique architectural details in this home were existing — including the beautiful green tile around the fireplace — so it was really just a matter of styling what was already there. A vintage kilim rug, molded Eames chair and vintage table, chairs and shelving unit give this dining room a sophisticated but warm and worn-in feel.
This room has such a nice blend of old and new. A well-worn rug, solid contemporary table, modern Eames shell chair and modern floor lamp and a set of Cesca chairs create a wonderful mix of warm accents against white walls. These armless versions of the chair tuck right under the table.
