Our client wanted to create a fresh outdoor living space within their outdated backyard and to give a makeover to their entire property. The overall setting was a tremendous asset to the spaces - a large wetland area just behind their home, full of interesting birds and wildlife that the homeowner values. We designed and built a spacious covered outdoor living space as the backyard focal point. The kitchen and bar area feature a Hestan grill, kegerator and refrigerator along with ample counter space. This structure is heated by Infratech heaters for maximum all-season use. An array of six skylights allows light into the space and the adjacent windows. While the covered space is the focal point of the backyard, the entire property was redesigned to include a bluestone patio and pathway, dry creek bed, new planting, extensive low voltage outdoor lighting and a new entry monument. The design fits seamlessly among the existing mature trees and the backdrop of a beautiful wetland area beyond. The structure feels as if it has always been a part of the home. For adding shade, ambiance and a touch of old-fashioned charm, there’s no beating a patio gazebo. These structures are typically made of wood or metal and feature a full roof, making them a bit more substantial than their open-slat cousin, the pergola. If you’re looking to provide ample shade and comfort to your patio, a gazebo is an excellent choice. While you dream up your ideal setup, allow the following patio gazebo ideas and photos to inspire you.

Choose a Design that Complements Your Yard

When you first think of a gazebo, you might imagine a classic white and round structure in the midst of a green lawn or quaint downtown. While you can absolutely bring this traditional look to your own patio, it’s also possible to go for something a bit more casual and contemporary. Take a look at some of the different types of gazebos below.

  • A-Line Roof: Typically grand and expansive, this style is ideal if you need a large structure that’ll offer cover for an outdoor living room. Go with a natural wood stain or a creamy white.
  • Flat Roof: With a straight and flat hardtop, this style offers plenty of protection from the elements while keeping a low-profile look. Flat roofs complement modern or contemporary homes.
  • Round, Pointed Roof: This classic style is full of character and beauty and is just right with Cape Cod or colonial-style homes. They’re often white with a wooden shake or shingle roof.

While you search for patio gazebo ideas, keep these different structural designs in mind, and consider what will look the best in your yard and with your home.

Decide What You Will Use It For

When picking out patio furniture to go within your gazebo, it’s wise to plan out what exactly you envision using the space for. If you want to host guests there, consider adding a built-in barbecue along with an outdoor dining set. Do you want a replica of your living room outside? Then set up a comfy sofa, chairs and a coffee table around a built-in fireplace. Keep in mind, if you live in a place with humid summers, simply offering shade may not be enough. One of the benefits of having a gazebo is that you can attach a ceiling fan from its rafters to keep a cool breeze going.

Create a Charming Landscape

Don’t forget to focus on the landscape that surrounds your patio gazebo. After all, you’ll want to have something beautiful to look out at! If your patio is off to one side of your yard, create a stepping stone or concrete paver path out towards it. Arranging a few trees that drape over your gazebo and off around the edges of your patio will make it feel almost like you’re in a treehouse. Limited on space? Simply plant an array of flowers around the base of the structure to help it blend right in. You’ll also have a variety of options when it comes to your patio hardscape. Some gazebos come with flooring attached, although many do not. Concrete pavers, stone or brick are all gorgeous options.
