Pivot Pad

Industrial Landscape, Austin

Early construction of Zen Garden between the carport and the house. The client and I went to a local junkyard and found parts of industrial machinery. We used them as garden sculpture, pots for plants, and opening for collecting rainwater from roof of carport. Notice the rusted steel wall in the recess at the end of the walkway. It is the entry door that pivots open. PHOTO: Ignacio Salas-Humara

The Zen garden is covered in pea gravel. Each piece of gravel is literally the size of a pea. This is so you can easily rake it like a traditional Japanese Zen garden. It's not great for walking on if you plan on using pea gravel for walkways. The round pieces in the garden are semi truck wheels we rescued from a steel salvage yard.

BTW, the gravel is about two to three inches thick.
