Inspiration for a contemporary gender-neutral dark wood floor nursery remodel in Orange County with black walls

These clients longed for a nursery that was anything but typical for the adoptive baby soon to join their family. In our first meeting they didn’t show us magazine clippings of rooms adorned with teddy bears, no fabric swatches with bumble bees, no choo choo trains, no princesses and no Disney characters. Not even blue or pink. Instead Torey slid a beautiful mid century modern globe across the table and said, “We thought this could be the inspiration for the nursery.” The globe itself is unconventional, with the ocean rendered black and countries in bright saturated green, red, orange, and yellow. We returned with a design that is fresh, vibrant, sophisticated and anything but ordinary. The palette is: green, yellow, black, and cream with orange and red accents. Black chalkboard paint covers two walls while a third boasts a custom colored wallpaper map. Random width stripes of green and cream create a lively canopy overhead. A new wall unit anchors the space while providing ample storage. We cushioned and lit the window seat for cozy reading. Incorporating a roll-out changing table helped free up floor space, a precious commodity in this small bungalow. A global theme emerges with the room populated by furnishings from around the world: a rocking chair form Mexico, the bombe chest repainted in green gloss lacquer, the mini Eames chairs, the Danish modern crib. The artful installation of felt taxidermy framed in lacquer surrounded by the numbers 1-9 serves as a whimsical teaching aid. Finally, the room is frosted with details like Jonathon Adler sconces, custom drapes hanging on a lucite rod, and a green shag “animal skin” rug. Photo Credit: Dan Benedict

Playroom - contemporary playroom idea in Kansas City with multicolored walls

This is take two on ‘The Bent House’, which was canceled after a design board did not approve the modern style in a conservative neighbrohood. So we decided to take it one step further and now it is the ‘bent and sliced house’. The bend is from the original design (a.k.a.The Bent House), and is a gesture to the curved slope of the site. This curve, coincidentally, is almost the same of the previous design’s site, and thus could be re-utilized. Similiar to Japanese Oragami, this house unfolds like a piece of slice paper from the sloped site. The negative space between the slices creates wonderful clerestories for natural light and ventilation. Photo Credit: Mike Sinclair

This New England home has the essence of a traditional home, yet offers a modern appeal. The home renovation and addition involved moving the kitchen to the addition, leaving the resulting space to become a formal dining and living area. The extension over the garage created an expansive open space on the first floor. The large, cleverly designed space seamlessly integrates the kitchen, a family room, and an eating area. A substantial center island made of soapstone slabs has ample space to accommodate prepping for dinner on one side, and the kids doing their homework on the other. The pull-out drawers at the end contain extra refrigerator and freezer space. Additionally, the glass backsplash tile offers a refreshing luminescence to the area. A custom designed informal dining table fills the space adjacent to the center island. Paint colors in keeping with the overall color scheme were given to the children. Their resulting artwork sits above the family computers. Chalkboard paint covers the wall opposite the kitchen area creating a drawing wall for the kids. Around the corner from this, a reclaimed door from the grandmother's home hangs in the opening to the pantry. Details such as these provide a sense of family and history to the central hub of the home. Builder: Anderson Contracting Service Interior Designer: Kristina Crestin Photographer: Jamie Salomon

I like the chalkboard walls. Probably would only want that on one wall, though. I also like the sort of indestructible tiling, though I am not a fan of vinyl tile for health reasons. - justinlaby
