Building this exceptional home cinema system in Westlake, TX was a pleasure from day one. Our clients have owned multiple home theaters, and wanted to step up the performance in this new media room. The construction of the room is heavily reinforced with 2x6s. The entire room has been insulated to keep the sound inside the room and minimize leakage to the rest of the house. The riser base for the back row of chairs was reinforced with wood screws, and was fully insulated. In addition, the walls have been sheetrocked with Quietrock. This treatment substantially keeps the sound from traveling between walls because of its high density coefficient. Because the media room is on the 2nd floor, a sound barrier was added to the floors to provide an additional layer of sound control within the room. The finished walls were treated with custom acoustic panels from Auralex. We applied absorptive, reflective and diffusive treatments throughout the room to create a well-balanced acoustic environment for music and movies. The interior designer brought in a faux painter to create a leather-like texture on the walls. She very creatively faux painted the acoustic cloth panels to match the leather look and feel of the room. A 7.2 complement of Triad speakers are optimally located within the room. The front three LCR speakers are positioned behind an acoustically transparent Stewart video screen. The four surround speakers are located in a horseshoe-shaped configuration and fully envelope the listener with all the subtle (and not-so-subtle) special effects. Two Triad Gold subwoofers are placed in the corners and are dialed into the room for maximum output and tautness of bass. Triad builds an in-wall speaker that is fully baffled which minimizes any sound loss through the walls, and the performance is outstanding. The electronics featured in this media room are cutting edge. A Wolf Cinema projector with a Variscope lens allows us to set up the most popular aspect ratios and project a brilliant light on a 143" diagonal screen. We utilized the latest pre/pro from Integra as well as Class D amplification from Bel Canto. The Integra incorporates Audyssey digital correction circuitry, which measures the room’s properties/acoustics and maximizes the sound in the room. The sources include an Oppo Blu ray player, AM/FM, DirecTV HD and AppleTV. The entire system is controlled by an RTI touchscreen remote for easy, intuitive control. The sound is effortless and it is a match made in heaven. The room consists of two rows of seating. The front row is a very comfortable pit seating group and the second row utilizes leather theater chairs. All of this leads to a well-appointed, acoustically superior media room.

Inspiration for a huge modern open concept carpeted and gray floor home theater remodel in Los Angeles with a projector screen and brown walls

The theater scope included both a projection system and a multi-TV video wall. The projection system is an Epson 1080p projector on a Stewart Cima motorized screen. To achieve the homeowner’s requirement to switch between one large video program and five smaller displays for sports viewing. The smaller displays are comprised of a 75” Samsung 4K smart TV flanked by two 50” Samsung 4K displays on each side for a total of 5 possible independent video programs. These smart TVs and the projection system video are managed through a Control4 touchscreen and video routing is achieved through an Atlona 4K HDMI switching system. Unlike the client’s 7.1 theater at his primary residence, the hunting lodge theater was to be a Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 system. The speaker system was to be a Bowers & Wilkins CT7 system for the main speakers and use CI600 series for surround and Atmos speakers. CT7 15” subwoofers with matched amplifier were selected to bring a level of bass response to the room that the client had not experienced in his primary residence. The CT speaker system and subwoofers were concealed with a false front wall and concealed behind acoustically transparent cloth. Some degree of wall treatment was required but the budget would not allow for a typical snap-track track installation or acoustical analysis. A one-inch absorption panel system was designed for the room and custom trim and room design allowed for stock size panels to be used with minimum custom cuts, allowing for a room to get some treatment in a budget that would normally afford none. Both the equipment rack and the projector are concealed in a storage room at the back of the theater. The projector is installed into a custom enclosure with a CAV designed and built port-glass window into the theater.

Basement home theater, family room, and entertaining space. Featuring a Monitor Audio Gold Series and James Loudspeaker 7.2 surround system. Contro4 automated shades, sconce, pendant, can, and LED lighting provide the ability to utilize ambient light from the walkout basement in the bar/lounge area to create a "one room" connected feel when entertaining, or close the blinds for complete theater blackout for home movie viewing. A cozy home theater in the Waterford area of Niwot, Colorado. An existing basement master bedroom and full width closet was removed to provide room for the screen and two rows of seating. The fabric walls hide the acoustic panels for maximum acoustic performance. The panel on the ceiling is also an acoustic treatment. Front left, center, and right channel Sunfire speakers are behind the acoustically transparent 108" diagonal screen. System also includes two Sunfire side surrounds, four in-ceiling Atmos speakers, and two 12" DefTech subwoofers. Five LED lighting zones are controlled via remote controlled Lutron RadioRa2 dimmers.

MKC Audio Video designed only the audio and video aspects of this home theater system. The front screen is a Screen Innovations Zero Edge Pro with Slate AT ambient light rejecting material. Behind the acoustically transparent screen are the LCR speakers for the front soundstage. Here we used Dali Phantom M-350 in-wall cabinet speakers. Also, in the front lower left wall is a Sonance invisible subwoofer. For the sidewalls, MKC AV installed our custom acoustic wall panels with grey Guilford of Maine fabric. These panels hide the surround speakers as well as the front and rear Atmos height speakers. The side and rear surround speakers are Dali Phantom M-250's and the Atmost speakers are OSD ACE870 speakers. The AVR is a Marantz Cinema 40 with a Sonance DSP-750 sub amp. The projector is a Sony 4K laser XW5000ES. The lighting and seating were purchased by the homeowner and do not represent our standards for quality.
