Visitors can step up to raised levels on both sides of the spa and pool: To the right is an outdoor seating area with a circular fire feature mounted in the cantilevered cast concrete steps. This feature mimics the form of the spa and has a sculptural fire element created by Brooklyn, N.Y.-based artist Elena Colombo. To the left is a deck with a fireplace – this one square and also embedded in the continuing line ofthe steps.

Our clients on this project were inspired by their travels to Asia and wanted to mimic this aesthetic at their DC property. We designed a water feature that effectively masks adjacent traffic noise and maintains a small footprint.

The clients had built a magnificent Italianate 'villa' with spectacular views of the Santa Barbara coastline. They had assembled an impressive array of garden objects from around the world which were to be incorporated into the gardens. But the challenges were numerous.
Object scale had to carefully managed in this 40 foot by 80 foot space -- The statuary, hardscape elements, and fountains were carefully separated throughout the landscape, in order to de-emphasize the disparate sizes. Objects included a six-foot high Buddha, a 12" high prayer bell, and a massive 1,500 pound stone urn. Additionally, spectacular tree specimens were chosen and carefully placed to provide a counterweight to the other objects in the garden.

If you like your outdoor decor to be classic and elegant, but also unexpected, try this understated but lovely combo. Sheared boxwood cones (try Wee Willie) are surrounded by Japanese skimmia, a pretty, evergreen shrub (zones 7 -9) that flowers in early spring. You’ll get the wintery contrast of leaves and cones now, with the promise of blooms to follow.

When the rare beauty of natural materials meets the extraordinary skill of talented artisans, something magical occurs. Here, recycled copper finds new life at the hands of Mexican craftsmen, as it is shaped and formed into a spectacular piece that exudes the fire and intensity of an awe-inspiring sunset over the southern seas. The solid iron base is hand forged into a rustic yet elegant silhouette that completes this dramatic ensemble.
Reclaimed copper is melted at extreme temperatures, formed into blocks and pressed into sheets. The sheets are hammered, put over an open flame and then adhered to an engineered hardwood core.
Each piece of copper is coated with two layers of lacquer for a subtle, protective sheen, although we recommend the use of pads and coasters to guard against deep scratches and stains.
The tabletop is handcrafted in Mexico; the base is hand forged from solid iron in Asia and powder coated in an aged black.

the bamboo is a clumping variety called Bambusa eutuldoides viridi-vittata , Asian lemon bamboo. This variety is a clumper and you do not need to contain it, however, do allow an 8'by 10' area for its ultimate growth. Bamboo does require constant maintenance and you will need to do some research for the specific variety you choose. Once planted, it will become a beautiful focal point and add a stunning tropical accent. Photo Credit: Sherwood Cox

Rob Sanders Architects LLC
Rob Sanders Architects was asked to expand an 1856 CT farmhouse which had numerous additions, and to replace the 1920's garage with a separate but connected three-car garage and guest suite. The new garage structure includes a bedroom and bath for frequent long-term visitors as well as a Potting room for the owner's avid gardening interests. A covered porch overlooks the rear paddock, which is used for tent parties and barn dances.
The garage is connected to the house by an arcaded covered breezeway, which angles to allow vehicle circulation between old stone farmwalls.
The Breezeway opens to a new entry and Mudroom, which features brick and cherrywood floors. A new hallway is lined with wainscoating with a custom pattern taken from the antique trim of the house, and opens to a new kitchen with multiple workstations. The work island features a massive endgrain butcher block work surface, supported by repurposed sea creature finials the owners found in Asia. The kitchen opens to a remodeled Family Room with fieldstone fireplace.
Upstairs, a new Master Bedroom suite extends the gable form of the original farmhouse, and has a roof deck to overlook the rear field.
The residence incorporates flooring made from old-growth pine and cherry trees harvested, dried, and milled on site. The HVAC system was modernized with a geothermal ground-loop system, reflecting the owners avid concerns about the environment.

A durable, meaningful design heals a devastated residential property bordering Acadia National Park and Somes Sound on Maine’s Mount Desert Island. Comprehensive stormwater management strategies shape new landforms, resulting in elegant grading and thoughtful drainage solutions. Native plant colonies stabilize the site, regenerate habitat, and reveal wildlife patterns. Exquisitely crafted new masonry, built from an authentic palette of local reclaimed materials, gives the garden a unified, established feel. Lichen-encrusted stone retaining walls define edges, thresholds, and overlooks, and thick slabs of salvaged granite embedded in the earth provide gathering terraces and pathways. With balance restored, brilliant seasonal drama unfolds.

This exterior courtyard serves as both a residential entertainment space and work place for the resident artist/sculptor. Applying Zen design principles, this space is minimalist in form, color and texture and seamlessly transitions from the home studio interior. A series of stepped walls provide vertical "planes" which visually extend the depth of the space. A subtle fountain provides audio interest that masks urban noise while providing visual movement.
