Mature trees as well as the homeowners' sculptures provided a starting point for this drought tolerant back yard. The hillside is very steep in places which required the plant material to be low maintenance and looking good year round. With a variety of succulents and agaves there is a nice place between the sculptural shape of the plants and the actual pieces of art.

The layout of the new kitchen has added more space for movement around the kitchen and the added cabinetry was super beneficial for extra storage. With a larger island and sitting area, quick meals and family gatherings are possible.

Although the couple expected to run into the usual issues of renovation, they soon learned that the house was in worse shape than they thought. While they had planned on some cosmetic changes and utility updates, it was soon apparent that the amount of neglect had taken a tole on the home. "We knew we would be living through some level of chaos," Catherine explains, "but didn't expect ti to be nearly as bad as it was, which was a complete gut-job of the entire house!"
Once the paneling and carpet were removed, and drop-ceiling dismantled, the special qualities of the house began to reveal themselves. Starting with a clean slate allowed the Williamsons to create the space as they wanted it to be. In order to allow more light to pass through the downstairs, Bryan created pass-throughs from the living room to the dining room. "We didn't want to take down the entire wall because we wanted to keep as much of the original layout as possible, so this was a good compromise," says Catherine. Having the open volume between rooms has also proven very beneficial for larger gatherings as well, as guests may converse more easily from room to room.

David Reeve Architectural Photography; This vacation home is located within a narrow lot which extends from the street to the lake shore. Taking advantage of the lot's depth, the design consists of a main house and an accesory building to answer the programmatic needs of a family of four. The modest, yet open and connected living spaces are oriented towards the water.
Since the main house sits towards the water, a street entry sequence is created via a covered porch and pergola. A private yard is created between the buildings, sheltered from both the street and lake. A covered lakeside porch provides shaded waterfront views.

The original A-frame home on this hillside lot was destroyed by wildfire. Not surprisingly, the clients wanted to rebuild a fire resistant home. Working together with their architect and builder, they chose a contemporary design with few, if any, fire susceptible, “weak links.”
When design was first discussed, the owners expressed a desire to have the house not be as exposed to the street as their previous. Primary motivation was privacy, but an added advantage was reducing solar heat gain on the southern exposure. The original concept was to bring some light in from the south, with the majority coming from the north along with fabulous views of the canyon and mountains nearby. As the conceptual building masses took shape, the architect was inspired to punch small openings into the south elevation, positioning them primarily for light infiltration, not to see out of. The goal was to compose a seemingly random-looking arrangement of the window fenestrations, even though their placement had a specific purpose in relation to each respective interior space.

The kitchen was at the top of the list for a total overhaul – the worn oak cabinets, dated appliances, and clunky layout all had to go. Removing the decorative soffits allowed us to take the new cabinetry all the way to the ceiling, adding functional storage and visually extending the room’s height. We reconfigured the layout from a modified U to an L-shape which accomplished several things – it opened up the kitchen to the dining room, redirected circulation, and most importantly, created space for an island. A brand new pantry was created for overflow food storage, bulk items, occasional dishware and small appliances, ensuring that our client’s goal of uncluttered countertops was achievable.
The finish selections and clean lines give a nod to the home’s mid-century bones. The wood island provides warmth and the light quartz countertops, textured backsplash and white cabinets keep the kitchen feeling light and bright. We opted to install open shelving above the sink which provides display space and needed storage without the bulkiness of an overhead cabinet. The matte black faucet, hardware and decorative pendants add another level of visual interest to the modern kitchen. To unify the kitchen and dining room, we replaced the drab kitchen flooring with select red oak hardwoods that were expertly installed and refinished to match the gorgeous wood flooring throughout the home.

The clients were skeptical about whether they should sell and build new or work with what they had. After reviewing our conceptual ideas for what their home could be, the remodel took on a life of it's own. A project that began as a kitchen remodel spread from room to room through the entire house. The end product is a bit of paradise.
