The mixture of textures and patterns in the apartment give it a contemporary feel while highlighting the traditional roots: in exposed brick and wood beams. Tied in with sleek furniture and an apropos floor rug, we can't imagine a better way to escape the hustle and bustle of New York City than in this chic oasis.

With the accent wall being so predominant in the space and extending from one end of the apartment to the other, it was only natural to stage this multi-functional space with decorative items that complimented the shade of green such as the fruit, flowers and blue decorative pillows.

Making a great room.... better! Utilizing a space to its fullest potential it always a careful balance. Here we've changed the floors to the furniture. Part of the process involves a nice balance of contrasting colors. Once the bones of the home are fixed, the frame of your overall design concept is in the color choices and how you will create your own yin and yang. The darker hardwood floors and contrasted with light natural tones of camel, eggshell, and creams. These give way to the ability to accent through a pop of color and textures.... from the wicker to the patterned accent pillows. The wicker is our connection to the deck furniture that is visible from the inside. The cream of the interior gives us the darker and warmer hues of yellow and crimson.

This two-story penthouse apartment embodies many of PMK’s ideas about integration between space, architecture, urban living, and spirituality into everyday life. Designed for a young couple with a recent newborn daughter, this residence is centered on a common area on the lower floor that supports a wide range of activities, from cooking and dining, family entertainment and music, as well as coming together as a family by its visually seamless transitions from inside to outside to merge the house into its’ cityscape. The large two-story volume of the living area keeps the second floor connected containing a semi-private master bedroom, walk-in closet and master bath, plus a separate private study.
The integrity of the home’s materials was also an important factor in the design—solid woods, concrete, and raw metal were selected because they stand up to day to day needs of a family’s use yet look even better with age. Brick wall surfaces are carefully placed for the display of art and objects, so that these elements are integrated into the architectural fabric of the space.
