Originally built in the 1940’s as an austere three-bedroom
partial center-hall neo-colonial with attached garage, this
house has assumed an entirely new identity. The transformation
to an asymmetrical dormered cottage responded to the
architectural character of the surrounding City of Falls Church
neighborhood.
The family had lived in this house for seven years, but
recognized that the plan of the house, with its discreet
box-like rooms, was at odds with their desired life-style. The
circulation for the house included each room, without a
distinct circulation system. The architect was asked to expand
the living space on both floors, and create a house that unified
family activities. A family room and breakfast room were
added to the rear of the first floor, and the existing spaces
reconfigured to create an openness and connection among
the rooms. An existing garage was integrated into the house
volume, becoming the kitchen, powder room and mudroom.
Front and back porches were added, allowing an overlap of
family life inside the house and outside in the yard.
Rather than simply enlarge the rectangular footprint of the
house, the architect sought to break down the massing with
perpendicular gable roofs and dormers to alleviate the roof
line. The Craftsman style provided texture to the fenestration.
The broad roof overhangs provided sun screening and
rain protection. The challenge of unifying the massing led
to the development of the breakfast room. Conceived as a
modern element, the one-story massing of the breakfast
room with roof terrace above twists the volume 45% to the
mass of the main house. Materials and detailing express the
distinction. While the main house is clad in the original brick
and new horizontal siding with trim and details appropriate
to its cottage vocabulary, the breakfast room exterior is clad
in vertical wide-board tongue-and-groove siding to minimize
the texture. The steel hand railing on the roof terrace above
accentuates the clean lines of this special element.

Kitchen - traditional kitchen idea in Philadelphia with wood countertops, raised-panel cabinets and blue cabinets

This lower Manhattan loft in a former printing house was originally designed by Specht Harpman for a couple of television producers. When the new owners bought it, they hired us to create a new interior in which to showcase their contemporary art collection and to accommodate their young family.

A retro 1950’s kitchen featuring green custom colored cabinets with glass door mounts, under cabinet lighting, pull-out drawers, and Lazy Susans. To contrast with the green we added in red window treatments, a toaster oven, and other small red polka dot accessories. A few final touches we made include a retro fridge, retro oven, retro dishwasher, an apron sink, light quartz countertops, a white subway tile backsplash, and retro tile flooring.

This small residential garden was a complete transformation of an existing landscape. The original front, back and side yards were poorly performing lawns areas. The front garden was built up with large local blast rock to create a level area for the house to sit upon. A second set of steps - large rock slabs - were used to give better access to the front entrance that was crowded by parked cars. Lush plantings were chosen to provide curb appeal and seasonal interest. Front yard plants selected are 'deer proof'. The side and back yard of this landscape were fenced to provide privacy and allow for a wider range of plant material. The back garden design incorporated sections of an existing rock retaining wall into rockery features as well as a raised planting bed and feature pond. Paving in the back patio areas is a coloured stamped concrete. The side yard pavers are Pennsylvania Bluestone slabs. Photos by Josh Leslie

In the master bedroom of the house, the navy blue walls and matching curtains give the room a calming, relaxed appeal, while the large sand-blasted windows provide ample light to energise a slow morning start.

“Unwind into a world of serene beauty engulfed in the minimalistic artistic tonality”
Orchid Heaven - “An abode where beauty & togetherness thrive”, is based on a modern, gutsy yet elegant family at the forefront of this project. The design team at K Studio envisioned the Indo-Western theme upholding the nuances of minimalism intertwined with functionality. They captured the minutest details of the customer’s expectations to deliver a classy dwelling that complimented the personal style of the client.
The entry to the living space has a welcoming demeanor in the form of a grand wooden door and a personalized signature calligraphic nameplate. The entire flat is engulfed in calming mint green pastel hues, and the Living Room is adorned with motif wallpaper on the right side. The classic and stylish wall clock with the cupboard unit placed under adds a touch of vibrancy to the entire space with additional room for storage. Grandeur is enlivened by the mauve & beige furniture while the distinct contrast is brought about by the dint of the brightly colored cushions. Color-coordinated paintings along with modern-day light fittings and upholstery infuse the entire living space with enchanting charm. A compact TV unit designed along clean horizontal and vertical lines helps to accentuate space.Classiness is carried forward by a well-crafted partition that upholds the underlying theme of minimalism as one proceeds into the dining area from the living room. The dining area is a breath of fresh air in terms of artistry. The artistic embellishment of the art pieces designed as leaves render a captivating look in the uncut mirror that is placed strategically to bear the reflection of the intricately designed art. The overall wood finish with the touch of elegance due to the marble hint brings about the finesse. The adjoining kitchen is an extension of the exquisiteness in the backdrop of peach & blue classiness while bringing the entire modular kitchen aspect to the fore.
The Master bedroom is a blast of pristine daintiness with an ivory-based bed that is enhanced with colorful quilts. The greenish texture of the background accentuates the overall look of the bedroom with great artistry displayed in the ceiling while having a dressing area adorned with traditional eye-catching moodhas. The pop-up moodhas coupled with the colorful sitting fabric was completely in accordance with the fusion of traditional and contemporary design that the customer wanted.
The second bedroom poses a young and geeky vibe inspired by the Maserati theme & the passion of its occupant. It reflects the personal style and interest of a classic car fan and the comfort of a tween's bedroom full of high-energy, unique storage solutions for displaying books and toys, and a striking bed design with a majestic Maserati poster in the background. The large oval mirror and the cool blue colour scheme enhance the comfort quotient of the room bringing to life the theme-inspired bed linen, and high-quality bedding.
The Guest room is an epitome of coziness and brilliance of minimalist designs. The sophisticated study area has a contemporarily designed bookshelf which lends a modern appeal to the room. The bright orange-hued sofa cum bed brings in the much-needed functionality while upholding the need for minimalism.
Conclusively, this project stands out as an archetype of minimalism while appealing to the functionality and sophistication of the designed space.

Dark light extravagance is well known
Dark is a shading that is anything but difficult to make top of the line sense, endless architects will pick this tone to coordinate in home beautification. Dark has an alternate soul, it has a solid resilience, and it can likewise blast out moving appeal with different shadings.
- Handle fewer bureaus
These days, the mainstream handle less cupboards is basic fit as a fiddle and without pointless improvement. They cannot just play a "filtering" visual improvement effect. But likewise have a basic and popular demeanor. It is unquestionably the most ideal decision for minimalists.
- Bright shadings
When planning a cutting edge kitchen, don't overlook the quiet language of shading. In spite of the fact that the kitchen is a weighty wellspring of vapor, as far as shading, it is not, at this point restricted to moderate plain and dull tones. Brilliant cupboards are mainstream, demonstrating essentialness, and making cooking not, at this point exhausted.

It’s always an excellent idea to renovate some corners in your house if you are looking to sell. It is crucial for you to remember to ‘sell it right,’ which means doing the upgrades and renovations accurately for your homebuyer. Some of the best home renovations — for instance, an upgraded kitchen, remodeled bathroom, or a new deck — can get expensive. This is why it is important to know what kind of return you might expect before you think of taking on a remodeling project.
Top Home Renovations in 2021
If you have smartly budgeted for major remodeling projects, here are some of the upgrades that will immediately add more value to your homes:
Kitchen Remodel
People can go wild in kitchen renovations, but it’s not always required. A kitchen remodeling, if done the right way, is certain to add more value to your home. You will love an even higher return if you remodel a kitchen with traditional designs and builds. This will include replacing your cabinets, refrigerator, stove, flooring, and even sinks and faucets.
Nowadays, a kitchen’s functionality and convenience are becoming more and more important. For instance, lowered light switches, cabinets, and racks can make it simpler for an elderly person or someone with a disability to explore the kitchen if they use a wheelchair. Cabinets with a hydraulic system can make it possible for a homeowner to move their position, ensuring it’s available within your reach no matter your mobility level.
Improving Your Outdoor Appeal
The outdoor appeal is basically the first impression of your home. That old front door, cracked driveway won’t help potential buyers feel an eternal connection with your home. The outdoor appeal can be improved with the application of new paint, gardening, or attractive landscaping. Hence, it is necessary for you to consider beforehand what improvements you are going to make, what you can do yourself, and what you need to outsource.
Begin where your property meets the main street. Are the walls well maintained and colored? Do driveways need to be redone or just a quick water blast to clean them? Do you need to paint your door or close the cracks on them or add a couple of planter pots to give more warmth to the entrance?
More expensive things include painting your house, adding a deck, or fencing your property. Before taking these costly projects, do seek professional advice about whether this will increase your property’s value.
Including Square Footage to Your Home
As mentioned above, expensive additions in remodeling include house extensions and reconfigurations of old rooms. This may lead to a larger ROI, so they’re worth assessing. You may want to add a bedroom, build a home office corner, make the living area by making it more spacious or add another bathroom. These extensions all add value to your home, but you’ll want to guarantee that you can get your money back once you sell the property.
Big projects are more expensive. Homeowners may want to think of applying for a home improvement loan to help them finance the project or ensure they have financial assistance in case the cost goes over the board.
The Bottom Line
Renovating your home not only adds to your excitement but can also increase your home’s value over time, as well.
If you live in an urban area, your listing might be competing with other upgraded homes to grab the buyers’ attention. When you refinance your house, for example, remodeling will be considered when a property appraiser studies your home’s current market value. Higher home value means you’ll get more equity and a lower loan-to-value ratio. Moreover, you might even be able to cancel personal mortgage insurance payments earlier than expected.
When you decide to sell your home, buyers will expect to see a clean, attractive home with modern updates that’s ready to move in.

ZINC: This is a little bit special which will ooze more and more character over the years as it ages. The zinc is hand-rolled onto each table before being hammered into place on top of the sand-blasted wooden legs. Seen here with our Café au Lait kitchen chairs and Geronimo chair. Looks great with our Hans kitchen chairs and our Blast stool.
