Wine cellars can be either active or passively cooled. Active wine cellars are highly insulated and need to be properly constructed. They require specialized wine cellar conditioning and cooling systems to maintain the desired temperature and humidity. In a very dry climate, it may be necessary to actively humidify the air if you live in Palm Springs or Indian Wells, CA, but in most areas this is not necessary. Passive wine cellars must be located in naturally cool and damp areas with minor seasonal and diurnal temperature variations—for example, a basement in a temperate climate. Installing wall stone on the inside and outside of a wine room or cellar helps you in achieving a true passive cellars that will cost you nothing to operate and are not affected by power outages if you live in places like the midwest or even sometime the east coast of the US.

When Hurricane Sandy hit, it flooded this basement with nearly 6 feet of water, so we started with a complete gut renovation. We added polished concrete floors and powder-coated stairs to withstand the test of time. A small kitchen area with chevron tile backsplash, glass shelving, and a custom hidden island/wine glass table provides prep room without sacrificing space. The living room features a cozy couch and ample seating, with the television set into the wall to minimize its footprint. A small bathroom offers convenience without getting in the way. Nestled between the living room and kitchen is a custom-built repurposed wine barrel turned into a wine bar - the perfect place for friends and family to visit. Photo by Chris Amaral.

Designs to Live With
This Big Horn Country Club house has a wine room with glass walls so guests in the living room can see the displays of the owner's wine collection on three walls. In addition to this style wine rack, there are also bottles stacked single file up the back wall. We also designed and made a huge rack to hold 1,12o bottles on the third wall. This large rack had room for unopened cases between the legs, diamond-shaped niches for standard-sized and magnum bottles, and the top was a bin style which would hold another 400 hundred bottles of wine.
