In this renovation, a spare bedroom was removed to expand the living and dining space. A central built in separates the living from the dining area and provides ample storage while serving as a media center.

Formal living room: We played off symmetry of the windows and fireplace to create the spacious conversational layout, perfect for this chill family that enjoys quiet evenings at home. To achieve a farmhouse chic look, we used a blend of luxe, luminous materials and traditional farmhouse finishes (rustic & reclaimed wood, iron). Fabrics are high performance (kid friendly) and the coffee table is virtually indestructible to little ones! We choose a color palette of muted blues and citrine to blend with the lush natural scenery on the property, located in suburban New Jersery.

An overdyed rug in tones of charcoal grey and violet covers a walnut stained hardwood floor, setting the stage for the inventive use of purples and mixed metals found in this traditional living room.
Elegant gold accents abound. Sapphire blue and white striped silk draperies hang from silver rods affixed with gold rings that echo the gold frame of the sofa and marble cocktail table. The gold thread continues onto the side tables, whose mahogany stain adds depth and coordinates with the espresso frames of the lounge chairs, which have been upholstered in a lavender tone-on-tone floral.
Resting on the dark grey crushed velvet of the sofa are a pair of floral pillows in shades of white, grey, purple, and blue. These pillows partner with two flame stitched navy and turquoise pillows that are accented with a turquoise striped velvet. Adding additional watery blue are a pair of aqua porcelain lamps topped with crisp white shades. Light gray walls and ceiling are trimmed in white and provide the quiet canvas required to allow the room’s regal colors to reign supreme.

The living room in this Bloomfield Hills residence was a part of a whole house renovation and addition, completed in 2016. Within the living room are signature paintings, artifacts, and furniture pieces that complement the eclectic taste of the client. The design of the room started off of a single centerline; on one end is a full-masonry fireplace and on the other is a signature 8' by 8' charity auction painting. This colorful painting helps liven up the room while providing focal point when entering the room. These two elements anchor the room, allowing focal points on both walls while accentuating the view to the back yard through three sets of French doors. The décor and furniture complements that of the artwork and artifacts, allowing the room to feel cohesive and inviting.

Drawing from the blue tones in the family’s heirloom tapestry, we chose Blue China by Valspar for the walls of this transitional living room. It ties the room together while evoking the feeling of antique shopping in New York City and admiring the Chinese porcelain that you find there. Vintage décor, a pair of custom-made traditional-style ottomans, and intricate patterned curtains are another nod to this history, while built-in bookshelves, a simple and refined fireplace, and the sleek frame of a chandelier offer modern touches that take this space from traditional to transitional.

This formal living room is anything but stiff. These teal-blue lacquered walls give this front living room a kick of personality that you can see the moment you walk into the house.

This three-story Westhampton Beach home designed for family get-togethers features a large entry and open-plan kitchen, dining, and living room. The kitchen was gut-renovated to merge seamlessly with the living room. For worry-free entertaining and clean-up, we used lots of performance fabrics and refinished the existing hardwood floors with a custom greige stain. A palette of blues, creams, and grays, with a touch of yellow, is complemented by natural materials like wicker and wood. The elegant furniture, striking decor, and statement lighting create a light and airy interior that is both sophisticated and welcoming, for beach living at its best, without the fuss!

Living Room Design with Custom Upholstered Furniture and Natural Materials by Susan Spath of Kern & Co. Overlooking the fairway in Rancho Santa Fe, this interior design features calming neutral tones and fine accessories. Susan Spath, award-winning interior designer. Kern & Co fine furniture.

Inspired by the vivid tones of the surrounding waterways, we created a calming sanctuary. The grand open concept required us to define areas for sitting, dining and entertaining that were cohesive in overall design. The thread of the teal color weaves from room to room as a constant reminder of the beauty surrounding the home. Lush textures make each room a tactile experience as well as a visual pleasure. Not to be overlooked, the outdoor space was designed as additional living space that coordinates with the color scheme of the interior.
