Dome skylights are a classic piece of architecture. Dome shape ceilings have been in popular since ancient times. The Hagia Sophia has a dome ceiling as does the Baltimore Basilica which features skylights within the dome. A modern alteration to the domed ceiling is to create an actual dome skylight which projects out the roof. Dome skylights gained popularity during the gilded age where they became a symbol of one’s wealth. The Biltmore Estate in North Carolina boasts a dome skylight which functions of the roof in the building’s atrium.
