The couple wanted a kitchen remodel and a fireplace added to the family room. The 8-foot extension on the house expanded the living space and led to a more expansive feel to the gorgeous kitchen and family room.
Kitchen
The new 13-foot island with Aura Quartz countertop allows the family to sit and chat while making meals and provides seating for casual meals and snacks. And with so much added counter space, the island is perfect for entertaining.
Wellborn Premier cabinets in Glacier finish provide plenty of storage space, including under the island. The island also features these cabinets, with a custom color match.
Most of the kitchen’s appliances are stainless steel. Stainless steel appliances last longer, making them an investment and are easier to keep clean.
The 36” range top has six burners and its red knobs add a pop of color to the stretch of white counter fronts and tops. The backsplash behind the range is Barossa Valley Arabesque tile. The rest of the backsplash along the counter is white subway tile, giving the area a simple but clean look. The GE Café double electric convection ovens make cooking large holiday meals a breeze.
The French door GE Café refrigerator has a full-width electronic temp-controlled drawer. A dual zone wine refrigerator has glass with stainless steel frame.
Although the homeowners could have had a stainless steel dishwasher, they opted instead to install an Asko. The dishwasher’s front panel blends so seamlessly into the kitchen’s décor, it’s hiding it in plain sight while it works.
The butler pantry has a suede finish that breaks up the space with LG Minuet countertop.
Family Room Update
The family room was updated with the addition of a fireplace. A 42” Heatilator icon fireplace with herringbone refractory, black Grand Vista mesh cabinet doors and an 18.5-foot flue pipe was installed. RH Peterson 24″ split oak vented gas logs can be seen here.
The fireplace hearth is cultured stone from Eagle Stone & Brick, a St. Louis company. The style is Country Ledgestone Echo Ridge. The barnwood mantel of reclaimed timber is Montecito’s Irish Castle.

This area of the kitchen received a facelift as well. Originally planning on adding built in on either side of the fireplace, the homeowners opted to go without them, instead focusing on a modern and cozy sitting area. The homeowner told us this is her favorite place in the house. Often times, at the end of the day, she sits here and reflects in the peace and quiet. And how awesome is that rolling barn door, handmade by a family member.

This transitional kitchen designed by Normandy Designer Stephanie Bryant has some of the clean lines of contemporary styles, and is blended with accents of traditional styles, such as mouldings and corbels. The chunky countertop on the island offsets some of the finer details and helps land this kitchen in the transitional style. Elegant Interior Designs in the Philadelphia Suburbs completed a full deck redesign winning a COTY Award in 2011.
The client had a poorly utilized dysfunctional deck consisting of a dining table, six chairs and a grill. The narrow dimensions of the deck precluded easy passage way around the table. In addition, the positioning of the grill and the depth of the deck did not allow enough room for a much needed conversational seating area. The pressure treated lumber was a maintenance and splintering problem.
There has been a dramatic change from the run down, dilapidated, dysfunctional deck to this stunning outdoor living space. As shown in the photo on the right, this project greatly enhances the existing structure aesthetically. It has increased the value of the property. It creates a more elegant and stately look and feel to the home.
• The furniture, fabrics and pillows are sun and mildew resistant and water repellant. They have a sophisticated style and are very durable due to their high rubs factor. Not only are they beautiful but practical as well.
PERGOLA
A cedar pergola was stained to match the deck boards and added over the dining area to create a more interesting outdoor living space. It also provided a place to attach the fan and light.
Now the dining area easily allows adequate traffic flow around the table.
LIGHTING
Deck time doesn’t end when the sun goes down. The lamp, fan with lights, wall fixtures and overhead spot lights add different levels of light that create a beautiful ambience.
Riser lights were added on every few steps that give off soft illumination for safety on stairs.
BEFORE COOKING AREA
The placement of the grill and the narrow width of the deck did not allow for adequate seating.
The removal of the grill on this side of the deck and the enlarged space allowed for the addition of a conversational seating area for relaxation with a fire pit for added ambiance and warmth on a chilly evening.
The stunning outdoor lamp is heavily weighted and can stand up to the elements.
Problems of slipping, splinters and maintenance are addressed.
The cognac colored deck boards are a PVC product engineered for maximum scratch, mildew and stain resistance. The deck boards were laid on a diagonal and bordered in a dark brown contrast color to add to the high end look. The black railing is a composite material with smooth lines and no visible hardware.
• Deck boards with a flat grain surface make it very slip resistant next to the pool.
• The products do not splinter, so the client can walk barefoot to the pool and hold all hand rails without fear.
• Low maintenance decking and railing material eliminates the need to stain and seal.

These homeowners came to J.P. Hoffman Design Build, looking for a creative solution to a problem they were told couldn’t be fixed. We defied the odds with our Design Build process and redesigned most of this Colonial’s first floor. Space for an island was number one on the want list. In order to achieve that goal, we did what we always do, We listened. We listened to what our client needed, how they used their space and how they envisioned their space. Then we designed a creative solution that made that seemingly unachievable vision, a reality. We removed the wall between the dining room and kitchen and expanded the kitchen cabinets into the hallway, once used to access the bathroom and garage. We simply re-routed the flow to the garage, through the now opened-up dining room, and in the process, created a new hallway with a coat closet, mudroom bench and access to the powder room which we also refreshed. In the kitchen, we relocated the slider leading out to the deck. This allowed for more cabinets and the floor space for that dream island. Our carpentry team installed a new kitchen window and slider, while modifying the existing deck to allow for the change. We installed new flooring, cabinets, countertops, plumbing fixtures and more. We receive lots of inquires about increasing function within the first floor. This project is a fantastic example of how it can be achieved, without an addition.

The homeowners came to us looking to update the kitchen in their historic 1897 home. The home had gone through an extensive renovation several years earlier that added a master bedroom suite and updates to the front façade. The kitchen however was not part of that update and a prior 1990’s update had left much to be desired. The client is an avid cook, and it was just not very functional for the family.
The original kitchen was very choppy and included a large eat in area that took up more than its fair share of the space. On the wish list was a place where the family could comfortably congregate, that was easy and to cook in, that feels lived in and in check with the rest of the home’s décor. They also wanted a space that was not cluttered and dark – a happy, light and airy room. A small powder room off the space also needed some attention so we set out to include that in the remodel as well.
See that arch in the neighboring dining room? The homeowner really wanted to make the opening to the dining room an arch to match, so we incorporated that into the design.
Another unfortunate eyesore was the state of the ceiling and soffits. Turns out it was just a series of shortcuts from the prior renovation, and we were surprised and delighted that we were easily able to flatten out almost the entire ceiling with a couple of little reworks.
Other changes we made were to add new windows that were appropriate to the new design, which included moving the sink window over slightly to give the work zone more breathing room. We also adjusted the height of the windows in what was previously the eat-in area that were too low for a countertop to work. We tried to keep an old island in the plan since it was a well-loved vintage find, but the tradeoff for the function of the new island was not worth it in the end. We hope the old found a new home, perhaps as a potting table.

This new home was designed to nestle quietly into the rich landscape of rolling pastures and striking mountain views. A wrap around front porch forms a facade that welcomes visitors and hearkens to a time when front porch living was all the entertainment a family needed. White lap siding coupled with a galvanized metal roof and contrasting pops of warmth from the stained door and earthen brick, give this home a timeless feel and classic farmhouse style. The story and a half home has 3 bedrooms and two and half baths. The master suite is located on the main level with two bedrooms and a loft office on the upper level. A beautiful open concept with traditional scale and detailing gives the home historic character and charm. Transom lites, perfectly sized windows, a central foyer with open stair and wide plank heart pine flooring all help to add to the nostalgic feel of this young home. White walls, shiplap details, quartz counters, shaker cabinets, simple trim designs, an abundance of natural light and carefully designed artificial lighting make modest spaces feel large and lend to the homeowner's delight in their new custom home.
