A seamless flow of overlapping color, textures and patterns guides you from one outdoor space to another. An integrated mix of local stone throughout: Vermont red and green slate patios, fieldstone walls and stepping stone paths, granite boulder sculptures from the land, river rock-lined drip edges. Low sculpted wood-stemmed plants and lush groundcovers, mostly cultivars of indigenous species. Moss-filled joints in the patios, groundcover draping over stone, thyme along edges of walls.

A 'Blue Cascade' blue atlas cedar wraps around a granite pillar to mark the entrance to the upper level conifer/zen garden. 'Toffee Twist' carex contrasts beautifully with the blue foliage of this conifer. Photo taken February, 2015, just after installation. Photo by Jay Sifford.

The Hope Lodge at Buffalo, NY was in desperate need of a tranquil, uplifting outdoor space for their guests. A long narrow space led to a paver-lined walkway, dotted with plenty of spaces to relax. Adirondack chairs, a wooden swing, a fire pit, and a zen garden round out the space and make it a perfect place for guests and their families to catch up or rest after treatment.

Our client’s garden was bereft of any interest, other than a large shed at the end of the garden, and a small patio outside the house. An unattractive stand of conifers dominated one side of the garden, and overpowered the space.
These two areas were linked using a bold design of interlinking circles, with a cobbled path snaking its’ way down the garden to create a feeling of greater width and depth. A dry stone wall sets off the patio, and frames the entrance into the main part of the garden.
A feature pot is set on a plinth at the bottom end of the garden, where it is visible from the house. The planting is colourful and interesting, with box balls used to reinforce the circular theme. The conifers have been removed and replaced with attractive ornamental trees that will provide more year round interest

Left to right. the Chamacyparis Torulosa Pom Pom, behind it is a Thuja Rheingold on Standard. The Tall tree is Cedar of Lebanon. the 3 balls in front are Chamacyparis Psifera gold mop. a weeping blue spruce, weeping Japanese maple Tamayukama, Miss Molly Butterfly bushes are behind the yellow balls. The green ground cover is Mazus Reptans.
