This 2,300-square-foot contemporary ranch is perched on a lake bluff preparing for take-off. The house is composed of three wing-like metal roofs, stucco walls, concrete floors, a two-story library, a screen porch and lots and lots of glass. The primary airfoil reflects the slope of the bluff and the single story extends the ground plane created by the pine-bow canopy. photo by leperephotography.com This 8400 square foot farmhouse respects the building forms, materials, and details of the earlier agricultural buildings of the Santa Ynez Valley. We used reclaimed corrugated metal on the two story water tower office. The stone used for the foundation face and the fireplaces was collected from the river which borders this 100 acre ranch. The outdoor fireplace is part of the large, wrap around porch which overlooks the surrounding fields and distant mountains.

The Eagle Harbor Cabin is located on a wooded waterfront property on Lake Superior, at the northerly edge of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, about 300 miles northeast of Minneapolis. The wooded 3-acre site features the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior, a lake that sometimes behaves like the ocean. The 2,000 SF cabin cantilevers out toward the water, with a 40-ft. long glass wall facing the spectacular beauty of the lake. The cabin is composed of two simple volumes: a large open living/dining/kitchen space with an open timber ceiling structure and a 2-story “bedroom tower,” with the kids’ bedroom on the ground floor and the parents’ bedroom stacked above. The interior spaces are wood paneled, with exposed framing in the ceiling. The cabinets use PLYBOO, a FSC-certified bamboo product, with mahogany end panels. The use of mahogany is repeated in the custom mahogany/steel curvilinear dining table and in the custom mahogany coffee table. The cabin has a simple, elemental quality that is enhanced by custom touches such as the curvilinear maple entry screen and the custom furniture pieces. The cabin utilizes native Michigan hardwoods such as maple and birch. The exterior of the cabin is clad in corrugated metal siding, offset by the tall fireplace mass of Montana ledgestone at the east end. The house has a number of sustainable or “green” building features, including 2x8 construction (40% greater insulation value); generous glass areas to provide natural lighting and ventilation; large overhangs for sun and snow protection; and metal siding for maximum durability. Sustainable interior finish materials include bamboo/plywood cabinets, linoleum floors, locally-grown maple flooring and birch paneling, and low-VOC paints.

This project encompasses the renovation of two aging metal warehouses located on an acre just North of the 610 loop. The larger warehouse, previously an auto body shop, measures 6000 square feet and will contain a residence, art studio, and garage. A light well puncturing the middle of the main residence brightens the core of the deep building. The over-sized roof opening washes light down three masonry walls that define the light well and divide the public and private realms of the residence. The interior of the light well is conceived as a serene place of reflection while providing ample natural light into the Master Bedroom. Large windows infill the previous garage door openings and are shaded by a generous steel canopy as well as a new evergreen tree court to the west. Master bathroom design & build in Houston Texas. This master bathroom was custom designed specifically for our client. She wanted a luxurious bathroom with lots of detail, down to the last finish. Our original design had satin brass sink and shower fixtures. The client loved the satin brass plumbing fixtures, but was a bit apprehensive going with the satin brass plumbing fixtures. Feeling it would lock her down for a long commitment. So we worked a design out that allowed us to mix metal finishes. This way our client could have the satin brass look without the commitment of the plumbing fixtures. We started mixing metals by presenting a chandelier made by Curry & Company, the "Zenda Orb Chandelier" that has a mix of silver and gold. From there we added the satin brass, large round bar pulls, by "Lewis Dolin" and the satin brass door knobs from Emtek. We also suspended a gold mirror in the window of the makeup station. We used a waterjet marble from Tilebar, called "Abernethy Marble." The cobalt blue interior doors leading into the Master Bath set the gold fixtures just right.

Back wall was done in brick panelling to give the space an industrial feel. Many gas, oil, and neon sign added as well as a custom made Harley Davidson bar with stainless steel footrail and epoxy top. The wall mural is 12 foot wide with a Route 66 neon sign installed into the picture itself.

Placed upon a sunlit grassy knoll facing Colorado’s San Juan, and San Miguel mountain ranges, with Utah’s La Salle Mountains to the south, North Star Ranch overlooks an Aspen painted valley with touches of Ponderosa and Scrub Oak accents. The core of the structure was designed with large facades of glazing facing the southern views while the garage was rotated 45 degrees to work with the existing grades as well as minimize the impact of the garage pod as one approaches the home. The home was thoughtfully sited to nestle next to a several large existing Ponderosa Pines creating an intimate mountain setting. Sustainable measures were discussed and implemented early during the design and construction process such as utilizing indigenous stone harvested from site for retaining walls and portions of the home’s veneer. Reclaimed materials were considered and implemented wherever possible, ranging from historic wood directly from “The Wizard of Oz” production set to miscellaneous parts from old mining carts historic to the area. The historic wood was given a patch work effect combining horizontal planks with a reverse vertical board and batten with a mixture rusted metal accents on certain walls to introduce a visual exception from the consistency of the wood. Wood and steel structural members such as timber trusses, knee braces, purlins, beams and columns are exposed throughout the exterior and interior as a way of celebrating the structure and telling the story of how the home is constructed. As guests arrive, they are welcomed by an entry bridge constructed from a single solid stone slab 2 1/2 feet thick spanning over a calm flowing stream. The bridge is covered by an articulated gable element supported by ornate columns and connections tying directly to the stone slab. The layout of the interior is divided into separate living corridors; a master core witch houses the master suite, office, sitting room and exercise room with a separate stair connecting to all three levels. The centrally located kitchen was designed with several working and entertaining stations defined by multiple islands and a floor to ceiling wall of glass in lieu of wall lined cabinets to allow for maximum natural light in the major public areas. The core living spaces are linked via an internal trestle bridge designed on location and constructed from old mine carts as the walking surface and the reclaimed steel wheels as a structural detail. The rest of the home is detailed throughout with ornamental ironwork, granites, tiles, etc. all enhancing the modern like aesthetic with an historic mining influence. (photos by James Ray Spahn)

Located on the pristine Glenn Lake in Eureka, Montana, Robertson Lake House was designed for a family as a summer getaway. The design for this retreat took full advantage of an idyllic lake setting. With stunning views of the lake and all the wildlife that inhabits the area it was a perfect platform to use large glazing and create fun outdoor spaces.

This is a route 66 theme garage / Man Cave located in Sylvania, Ohio. The space is about 600 square feet, standard two / half car garage, used for parking and entertaining. More people are utilizing the garage as a flex space. For most of us it's the largest room in the house. This space was created using galvanized metal roofing material, brick paneling, neon signs, retro signs, garage cabinets, wall murals, pvc flooring and some custom work for the bar.

This family’s basement had become a catch-all space and was sorely underutilized. Although it was spacious, the current layout wasn’t working. The homeowners wanted to transform this space from closed and dreary to open and inviting. Specific requirements of the design included: - Opening up the area to create an awesome family hang out space game room for kids and adults - A bar and eating area - A theater room that the parents could enjoy without disturbing the kids at night - An industrial design aesthetic The transformation of this basement is amazing. Walls were opened to create flow between the game room, eating space and theater rooms. One end of a staircase was closed off, enabling the soundproofing of the theater. A light neutral palette and gorgeous lighting fixtures make you forget that you are in the basement. Unique materials such as galvanized piping, corrugated metal and cool light fixtures give the space an industrial feel. Now, this basement functions as the great family hang out space the homeowners envisioned.
