Leclair Decor
We are a young newly wed couple who decided to ask for cash gifts at our wedding so we could decorate our new digs. We received the keys the morning after becoming Mr & Mrs Leclair, and to this day we have yet to take a honeymoon. Both of us had a brewing passion for modern interior decorating that needed to be fulfilled. Our previous 1 bedroom apartment was a great warm up but the real challenge was ahead. We received generous gifts to get us started but after the wedding, closing costs and a few unexpected costs we were left with a fairly conservative budget to work with.
First up was painting. None of the existing loud colours in the house were really to our liking. So started the giant task of painting every single wall in the house. Oh, and throw the garage and front entrance doors in there also. Thankfully Melissa works at a paint store so we were able to receive a few free cans and some really good deals on others. Quick shout out to Benjamin Moore and Pittsburgh Paints reps. After accomplishing this feat (with the help of family & friends) we decided a few walls needed some punch. A little wallpaper you say? Why not.
Next up was lighting. Most of the fixtures were out of date or not giving us the desired effects. With the help of our handy uncle Rob, we changed every single fixture in the house and out. A few have actually been changed twice. Always a learning curb, right? We splurged on a few pendants from specialized shops but most have been big box store purchases to keep us on budget. Don’t worry, when we strike it rich we’ll have Moooi pendants galore.
After the hard (wasn’t that bad) labor came time to pick furniture pieces to fill out the house. We had ordered most of the big ticket items before the move but we still needed to find the filler pieces. Had a great time driving around town and meeting local shop owners. After most of the furniture shopping was complete we had next to nothing left over for art and a lot of empty walls needed some love. Most of the art in the house are pictures we took ourselves, had printed locally and mounted in Ikea frames. We also headed down to the local art supply store and bought a few canvases on sale. Using left over house paint we created some large bold abstract pieces.
A year has now passed since we first got the keys and we’re, mostly done. Being home owners now, we also realized that we’ll never actually be done. There’s always something to improve upon. Melissa’s office hung in the balance of our undecided minds but after a recent retro chair purchase we’ve been re-inspired. That room is coming along nicely and we should have pictures up shortly. Most of what we’ve done are cosmetic changes. We still plan on upgrading the kitchen, upstairs bath and replacing the old carpets for some swanky hardwood floors. All in due time.

Inside-Out Designs
The inspiration for this guest bathroom started with the shower curtain, and off I went from there! The tan tiles are ceramic, so more cost effective than natural stone, and also easy on the maintenance. The black trim tiles are marble, and add a soft richness to complete the look.

The finished design adds drama to a room in a cost effect and simple way. This can be recreated using many different design and colours.

Step 5 - Lay the first colour down, I like to use a mini roller and I buy mini 250ml Dulux vinyl matt finish tester pots from Dulux Decorator Centre. These are a cost effective way of achieving a high-end result without buying large pots of paint and have a lot of wastage. Allow the paint to dry fully.
Step 6 - Once dried, remove the tape to expose the lines then tape up again masking over the first black colour.
Pinnacle Design & Remodeling
We helped update the space while being cost effective. A prefab double vanity, porcelain white tile that had some brown veining throughout for the floors and shower walls helped make the space feel large. We also did a deeper three wall bathtub alcove to help add that touch of design and mixing high and low cost items.

This modern farmhouse located outside of Spokane, Washington, creates a prominent focal point among the landscape of rolling plains. The composition of the home is dominated by three steep gable rooflines linked together by a central spine. This unique design evokes a sense of expansion and contraction from one space to the next. Vertical cedar siding, poured concrete, and zinc gray metal elements clad the modern farmhouse, which, combined with a shop that has the aesthetic of a weathered barn, creates a sense of modernity that remains rooted to the surrounding environment.
The Glo double pane A5 Series windows and doors were selected for the project because of their sleek, modern aesthetic and advanced thermal technology over traditional aluminum windows. High performance spacers, low iron glass, larger continuous thermal breaks, and multiple air seals allows the A5 Series to deliver high performance values and cost effective durability while remaining a sophisticated and stylish design choice. Strategically placed operable windows paired with large expanses of fixed picture windows provide natural ventilation and a visual connection to the outdoors.

Saikley Architects
Our busy Silicon Valley clients asked us to convert their tight-quartered 1960’s ranch house to a gracious family home that would meet their long term needs. Ease of living was paramount, both in functionality and in ordered design.
The project was completed on a moderate budget. While retaining most of the structure of the existing house to avoid costly structural changes, we opened walls to improve the sight lines and flow of the house and bring in more light. We made small additions at the front and back bedrooms to gain space for the family and relatives. An existing underused patio area was improved with a simple outdoor kitchen and overhang to extend the living space to the outside. Costs were kept down with choices of modest materials.
Everything was made to be functional. Ample storage has been built into the right places. The details of the kitchen were carefully worked out to accommodate all the wishes of the various cooks in the family. The house is set up to be easy to keep clean. Acoustic walls separate living from bedroom spaces so adults can enjoy time together while children sleep. The outdoor kitchen has easy access to the indoor kitchen and the garage, and its setup promotes socializing while cooking outdoors.
A large part of the narrow back yard was previously unusable space due to a steep slope up to a neighbor’s higher fence. With a new retaining wall and some re-grading we took back more of the yard for the patio and play space on a new lawn.
The remodeled house is a mix of contemporary and traditional elements. Cool colors have a calming effect. Traditional items such as prairie style windows, trellis, mosaic tiles, and Shaker style cabinets, break down the scale in an otherwise streamlined, contemporary design. A new gabled roof with a broad arch at the front of the house marks the entry and resolves a challenging form where the central entry is set back from walls on both sides.

Pool Farm by David Seiter of Future Green Studio
High above Midtown Manhattan, this transformed rooftop pool is now a farm-to-table restaurant, the Press Lounge, offering guests a dazzling view of the New York City skyline. From the 19th floor of Ink Hotel, a beautifully designed edible garden is meticulously cared for to create seasonal food and drink options from ingredients grown onsite. Utilizing themes of material reuse and urban infill, this custom design and fabricated system of wood terraced planters transforms an underutilized rooftop pool into a dynamic private dining experience. The project is inspired by the structure of a sushi mat- with flexibility in one direction and rigidity in the other, the mat rolls fluidly from deck to bench to planter to wall. In an effort to make the project sustainable and cost effective, ipe wood decking was salvaged from a recent renovation and repurposed. The planting palette was selected in consultation with the restaurant’s chef, professional forager and a rooftop farmer in order to orchestrate the edible garden with unique seasonal food and drink menus. A small slice of paradise has been found in Hell’s Kitchen. Photo by K•Taro Hashimura
