Phantom Screens, the leading manufacturer of retractable screens in North America, selects Bob Michels Construction of North Oaks, Minnesota as their 2016 Impact Winner.
The Phantom Screens Impact Award recognizes residential design and building professionals for using innovative products to deliver cutting edge designs that set them above the rest. Impact Award winners have proven that they are committed to enhancing lifestyles and living spaces by integrating Phantom’s retractable screen products into designs that deliver added value and comfort to today’s homeowner.
Bob Michels Construction’s submission is a unique space featuring a car carousel which operates both as a space to highlight the owner’s car collection and the functional purpose to turn cars around and drive out of the showroom. Phantom’s retractable screens turned the open-air ramada into a large entertaining and gathering screened porch area with one touch of a button.
“Phantom’s retractable screens were used to achieve a desired mix of modern and traditional finishes,” said Andrew Michels, Vice President of Bob Michels Construction. “Phantom Screens is the only company that allowed the customization of this unique space with a long-lasting and sustainable product.”
The winner was selected by a panel of Phantom Screen judges and evaluated primarily on design and creativity, market appeal and livability, and product integration. The winning project received recognition on booth signage at the NAHB International Builders Show, a one-page advertorial feature in Builder magazine, an in depth case study and more!

A beautiful home was surrounded by an old and poorly laid out landscape before our firm was called in to evaluate ways to re-organize the spaces and pull the whole look together for the rich and refined tastes of this client. Today they are proud to entertain at poolside where there is now enough space to have over-flowing parties. A vine covered custom wood lattice arbor successfully hides the side of the garage while creating a stunning focal point at the shallow end of the pool. An intimate courtyard garden is just a step outside the Master Bedroom where the sounds of the central water fountain can be heard throughout the house and lush plantings, cobblestone paving and low iron rail accents transport you to New Orleans. The front yard and stone entry now truly reflect this home’s incredible interior and a charming rose garden, that was once an unused lawn area, leads to a secret garden.

An interior palette of natural wood and subtle color shifts mimics the natural site. It also narrates a story of the rough bark (the exterior shell) concealing the warm interior heartwood.

Mouser Cabinetry Centra division was chosen by the homeowner to complete the remodel to her lakeshore home. Starlite designer, Shari Bakker, assisted the homeowner in choosing two different cabinet colors in the same door style. Perimeter Cabinetry chosen was Sonoma Maple Divinity and island cabinetry was Sonoma Maple Ebony. Extra features worked into the design include open bookcase, after-market table that fit over the top of the island, open cabinetry over the refrigerator, and an after-market range hood painted to match the island.

We had the privilege of recently helping a new homeowner find a "last piece of the puzzle" rug to complement her new furnishings in her newly painted living room in her new home. We were given a color board of fabrics and paint about six weeks prior to installation. In that time we located twelve different hand-knotted rugs which addressed the personal desires of the customer for her room within the constraints dictated by the established choices. We should note here that in advance of seeing any of the rugs in the room, the consensus preference was for a rug that powerfully brought forth the dark burgundy and brown accents common to the fabrics. As often happens, preconceived preferences were not the optimal solution for room -- which is why any "must buy it before you try it" rug offer should be ignored -- and all of the burgundy or darkly colored rug selections upset the integrity of the room which the customer had carefully established by her earlier decisions.
Our customer's rug choice after a lengthy presentation and comparison of all the choices she had pre-selected for consideration is one that she had considered early in the process and which maintains an overall balance in her room.
The light background with burgundy and camel accents does not overpower the rest of the furnishings and preserves the sense of volume in the room by not imposing an overpowering (dark) background on the floor. The other furnishing elements are not camouflaged or diminished by the rug, and the room has the calm, integrated feel of a well composed painting.
As we constantly state, "Good taste cannot be disputed". We commend our customer for her tasteful selections throughout her new home; one element of which -- the living room rug -- we had the privilege to help her resolve.

All windows were re-positioned strategically to take full advantage of the view, for example, the living room new windows were positioned to take full advantage of the beautiful views of the property. The linear layout of the new windows in the living room was designed to frame and echo the panoramic view of the beautiful pond, farm fields, tree lines and the Adirondack mountains seen beyond As part of architectural and interiors design, here Mitra paid careful attention to use green building products as much as possible, which was done by selecting and using environmentally friendly and low VOC emission products, as well as sing salvaged products where possible, and using as much local products as possible.
Aside from using green building products as much as possible, another very important goal of this project was to dramatically improve and maximize the energy efficiency of this home. To meet the specific and mechanical needs, a team of independent expert energy efficient consultants was assembled at the early phase of the design, so that energy solutions were studied and evaluated to the fullest. After extensive energy audits and study of the existing conditions and after extensive evaluation and brainstorming between all parties, Mitra compiled all the information and findings and incorporated them in her design solutions. In short, during construction, extensive energy upgrading measures were achieved by constructing a tight insulating envelope on the interior sides of all exterior walls and roofs, installing the most efficient heating and cooling system along with the introduction of a geothermal system installation. All windows and doors were replaced by state of the art and modern design energy efficient product available in the market which also visually modernized the design and maximized the beautiful westerly view of the landscape outside. To further address the energy efficiency of this project Mitra designed a concrete and steel and concrete fireplace box for it so that it can act as a chase for the mechanical needs of this new super energy efficient fireplace unit. - Photo credit: Susan Teare
