Bellingham Bay Builders
The owners of this home came to us with a plan to build a new high-performance home that physically and aesthetically fit on an infill lot in an old well-established neighborhood in Bellingham. The Craftsman exterior detailing, Scandinavian exterior color palette, and timber details help it blend into the older neighborhood. At the same time the clean modern interior allowed their artistic details and displayed artwork take center stage.
We started working with the owners and the design team in the later stages of design, sharing our expertise with high-performance building strategies, custom timber details, and construction cost planning. Our team then seamlessly rolled into the construction phase of the project, working with the owners and Michelle, the interior designer until the home was complete.
The owners can hardly believe the way it all came together to create a bright, comfortable, and friendly space that highlights their applied details and favorite pieces of art.

"Paradise Found" ~ How an architect used unwanted land
to build his dream home.
The house began with a marriage proposal. On the pretext of scattering wildflower seeds, architect Ron Sutton brought his then girlfriend, Lisa Kincheloe, to a grassy plot of land overlooking Northern California's Petaluma River. When they reached the spot near Novato where the house now stands, he led her through the home as he imagined it.
"He showed me where all the rooms would be and how it would be laid out," says Lisa. Then Ron proposed, and she accepted. Two years and two children later, the new home is a reality. Many years ago, the electric company ran large, ugly power lines across the River near this site. Ron says this is why the land remained undeveloped after the farmhouse that used to be on the site burned down. "The property had been on the market for more than a year without a single offer," he says. "The owner tried to give it to a government agency, but even they didn't want it. But when I saw it, I got excited because it was exactly what I'd been looking for. "Ron positioned the 2,200-square-foot house so that the old oak trees on the property screen out views of the enormous power lines. From the house, all you see is the sparkling river and the waving grasses in the marsh that surrounds it.
Imagining the house was the easy part; getting it built was a challenge. Because of the proximity to wetlands and power lines, the design had to be approved by a gauntlet of local, state, and federal agencies.
THE BARN IDEA, UPDATED
Barns--the ones Ron remembers from growing up in rural Minnesota and the one standing on the property--inspired the home's design. "Barns are beautiful and simple. They have an open floor plan, big openings to the outdoors so livestock and equipment can pass through, and lots of storage," Ron says. "I adapted those ideas for the house." The house has an open plan. Large, barnlike doors slide on tracks to screen the office and bedroom for privacy. Huge sliding glass doors line the east side of the house. When they roll aside, no barrier exists between the living area and the landscape. It is, indeed, large enough for a tractor to pass through.
PERSONAL TOUCHES
Sentimental objects surround the Suttons. They were married in the house before it was finished, and they registered at a nursery so guests could give flowers and trees for the landscaping as gifts. "When we show people around, we point out the plants they gave us," Ron says.

Cleaning Mold with Bleach is Hazardous, Don't use bleach, Mold,
Using chlorine bleach to kill mold is probably one of the worst things you can do.
As a matter of fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), stopped recommending the use of bleach for dealing with mold issues. And, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updated their guide as well, removing the suggestion to use bleach to kill mold.
The problem is, it’s true that bleach can kill some mold in some places, some of the time. But, bleach only works to remove mold on hard, impermeable surfaces like bathtub and shower surrounds or tiles. However, on porous surfaces like drywall or hardwood floors, it won’t work to kill mold or keep it from coming back.
Mold spreads its roots deep into porous surfaces.
Simply spraying a bleach solution on the surface won’t kill mold spores at their roots.
Here are some reasons Why you should NOT to Use Bleach to Kill Mold:
1) Bleach is Caustic, with High VOC's and can cause Burns to your Eyes, Nose and Throat and Skin. Your Pets paws, can get burned, and Pets lick their paws.
2) Bleach encourages toxic mold growth on porous surfaces because it provides excess moisture.
3) Bleach is extremely corrosive, and corrodes Metal Fastners, such as Screws and Nails, Water Pipes, Waste and Drain Pipes.
4) Bleach only removes the color from mold.
5) Chlorine bleach is extremely harmful to surfaces.

Paragon Pools
20 Fabulous Pool Designs Under 600 sq feet of Water Surface Area
Custom pools are a much-desired amenity in Southern Nevada, however in accordance with the 2022 water use ordinance, new residential pools may NOT exceed 600 sq ft of water surface area. The square footage includes a total of the pool, spa, and any infinity-edge troughs where applicable. And, there is also a ban on independent water features.
Paragon Pools’ VP & Chief Design Executive Joseph A Vassallo, CBP provides 20 pool designs under 600sq ft as an inspiration for homeowners.
Excerpt from the SNWA website: Residential pool size limits
Ongoing drought and climate change conditions continue to affect water levels in Lake Mead – Southern Nevada's primary water supply. As a result, the federal government declared a shortage on the Colorado River, reducing Southern Nevada's available water supply by 8.1 billion gallons, and additional reductions are expected in the coming years.
To help manage these water supply constraints, the Southern Nevada Water Authority approved a resolution in July 2022 that supports a 600-square-foot surface area limit on new residential pools. The Las Vegas Valley Water District and other local jurisdictions approved this change shortly thereafter with rule and code changes. This measure will help reduce consumptive water use associated with evaporative water loss, targeting savings from the top 25 percent of new pools constructed.
CeilDex Stretch Ceilings
Our new project.
To implement it, we were invited by the company in San Francisco. We had a very difficult task to do.
The building in which we had to install sound-absorbing panels has a historical and architectural value, and the main thing was not to harm anything.
And at the moment the building is used by the federal government, so that the work had to be carried out quickly and quietly, not to disturb the employees working in the building.
We have carefully selected materials, so that the shade of color on the wall would be completely coincided with shade of the fabric set. In the choice, we stopped at a specially made for this purpose CLIPSO sound-absorbing fabric. This material is better than any other for this kind of work: 1) Clipso Sound Proof is specially designed for sound absorption. 2) This material is made of synthetic fabric impregnated with polyurethane, it is ready to cope with significant operational loads in public buildings. 3) The texture of the material looks like a canvas, which creates an additional atmosphere of comfort and harmony with every interior of the premises where we have installed it. In the base, behind the CLIPSO fabric, we have installed an additional layer of sound-absorbing material.
This combination has increased the sound absorption to a factor of 1.0 (100%). All premises in which the work was carried out was provided to us for 3 days. During this time, we had to remove all lights, grille ventilation systems, as well as safety sensors and fire extinguishing systems.
Then install the mounting profile in the places told by the architects, mount a layer of sound-absorbing material and sound-absorbing fabric CLIPSO. Then, it was necessary to put back all dismantled equipment.
With this task we coped.
