San Juan constructed a series of unique Satina™ tropical hardwood screens that form parts of the home’s facade, railings, courtyard gate, and more. “Architect Michael Morrow of Kinneymorrow Architecture came to us with his design inspiration, and I have to say that we knocked it out of the park,” says E. F. San Juan’s president, Edward San Juan. Challenges: The seeming simplicity of this exterior facade is deceptively complex. The horizontal lines and spacing that Michael wanted to carry through the facade encompassed gates, shutters, screens, balcony rails, and rain shields had to be incredibly precise to fit seamlessly and remain intact through the years. “It’s always a challenge to execute contemporary details, as there is nowhere to hide imperfections,” says Michael. “The reality of being in a seaside climate compounded on top of that, especially working with wood.” Solution: The E. F. San Juan engineering department worked out the complex fabrication details required to make Michael’s design inspiration come together, and the team at Galvas Construction did an excellent job of installing all pieces to bring the plan to fruition. We used our trademarked Satina™ tropical hardwood to fabricate the facade and engineered tertiary attachment methods into the components to ensure longevity. “This was one of the most complex exteriors we have engineered, and, as always, we loved the challenge,” Edward says. Michael adds, “The exterior woodwork on this project is the project, and so this one would not have been possible without E. F. San Juan. Collaborating was a joy, from working out the details to the exquisite realization. Inspiration for a huge timeless wooden u-shaped staircase remodel in Other with painted risers

KitchenLab Interiors’ first, entirely new construction project in collaboration with GTH architects who designed the residence. KLI was responsible for all interior finishes, fixtures, furnishings, and design including the stairs, casework, interior doors, moldings and millwork. KLI also worked with the client on selecting the roof, exterior stucco and paint colors, stone, windows, and doors. The homeowners had purchased the existing home on a lakefront lot of the Valley Lo community in Glenview, thinking that it would be a gut renovation, but when they discovered a host of issues including mold, they decided to tear it down and start from scratch. The minute you look out the living room windows, you feel as though you're on a lakeside vacation in Wisconsin or Michigan. We wanted to help the homeowners achieve this feeling throughout the house - merging the causal vibe of a vacation home with the elegance desired for a primary residence. This project is unique and personal in many ways - Rebekah and the homeowner, Lorie, had grown up together in a small suburb of Columbus, Ohio. Lorie had been Rebekah's babysitter and was like an older sister growing up. They were both heavily influenced by the style of the late 70's and early 80's boho/hippy meets disco and 80's glam, and both credit their moms for an early interest in anything related to art, design, and style. One of the biggest challenges of doing a new construction project is that it takes so much longer to plan and execute and by the time tile and lighting is installed, you might be bored by the selections of feel like you've seen them everywhere already. “I really tried to pull myself, our team and the client away from the echo-chamber of Pinterest and Instagram. We fell in love with counter stools 3 years ago that I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on, thank god, because then they started showing up literally everywhere", Rebekah recalls. Lots of one of a kind vintage rugs and furnishings make the home feel less brand-spanking new. The best projects come from a team slightly outside their comfort zone. One of the funniest things Lorie says to Rebekah, "I gave you everything you wanted", which is pretty hilarious coming from a client to a designer.

Family members enter this kitchen from the mud room where they are right at home in this friendly space. The Kitchens central banquette island seats six on cozy upholstered benches with another two diners at the ends. There is table seating for EIGHT plus the back side boasts raised seating for four more on swiveling bar stools. The show-stopping coffered ceiling was custom designed and features beaded paneling, recessed can lighting and dramatic crown molding. The counters are made of Labradorite which is often associated with jewels. It's iridescent sparkle adds glamour without being too loud. The wood paneled backsplash allows the cabinetry to blend in. There is glazed subway tile behind the range. This lovely home features an open concept space with the kitchen at the heart. Built in the late 1990's the prior kitchen was cherry, but dark, and the new family needed a fresh update. Convert a small space to a polished eye-catching and functional home office. We used white painted maple wood veneers and solid wood painted doors, moldings and trims to give the space a formal style. This home office boasts under cabinet LED lighting, doors with glass inserts, upper cabinets surrounded by wrap around shelving for books and accent pieces and sturdy maple wood drawers for storing office supplies or filing important documents.

This project was for clients who we had worked with previously. A couple of years after we finished our first project with them - a remodel of their kitchen – these clients approached us again and asked us to design a weekend cabin for them in Eastern Washington. Located in the Wilson Ranch community of the Methow Valley, the area is a winter ski hub in Washington and a training ground for the US Nordic ski team. Our client skied collegiately for the University of Wisconsin and was attracted to this area for its miles of groomed trails and business networking opportunities. A lot of of Seattle’s newly minted wealth has weekend retreats in this valley and these folks dine at the same establishments on Friday and Saturday evenings. Our solution for this cabin relies upon our favorite scheme – the Great Room concept. In this instance, the entire structure is anchored by a massive masonry fireplace and each room is strategically located to maximize the plan’s efficiency. Drawing upon the homestead history of this valley, we employed a rugged aesthetic that is reflective of the old west. In the Great Room itself, heavy timber trusses are utilized to great structural and aesthetic effect and contribute to the masculine theme. On a more contemporary note, the open floor plan flows seamlessly from space to space and the use of a window wall and high dormers introduce ample daylight throughout the interior. Typical of many of our structures, the exterior envelope is highly detailed while covered walkways provide shelter from the harsh winters in this region.

When this suburban family decided to renovate their kitchen, they knew that they wanted a little more space. Advance Design worked together with the homeowner to design a kitchen that would work for a large family who loved to gather regularly and always ended up in the kitchen! So the project began with extending out an exterior wall to accommodate a larger island and more moving-around space between the island and the perimeter cabinetry. Style was important to the cook, who began collecting accessories and photos of the look she loved for months prior to the project design. She was drawn to the brightness of whites and grays, and the design accentuated this color palette brilliantly with the incorporation of a warm shade of brown woods that originated from a dining room table that was a family favorite. Classic gray and white cabinetry from Dura Supreme hits the mark creating a perfect balance between bright and subdued. Hints of gray appear in the bead board detail peeking just behind glass doors, and in the application of the handsome floating wood shelves between cabinets. White subway tile is made extra interesting with the application of dark gray grout lines causing it to be a subtle but noticeable detail worthy of attention. Suede quartz Silestone graces the countertops with a soft matte hint of color that contrasts nicely with the presence of white painted cabinetry finished smartly with the brightness of a milky white farm sink. Old melds nicely with new, as antique bronze accents are sprinkled throughout hardware and fixtures, and work together unassumingly with the sleekness of stainless steel appliances. The grace and timelessness of this sparkling new kitchen maintains the charm and character of a space that has seen generations past. The huge single under-mount stainless sink is positioned at the window over-looking the pool and lush back yard. The bump-out design adds interest and the latches on the upper cabinet doors add a nautical/coastal flair. There are two islands, this "front" one convenient to the sink and refrigeration features ample storage with many drawers including the microwave drawer. The counter is Labrodorite which is commonly used for jewelry. It's iridescent and sparkles like moonstone. The center section between the two islands features an oval wood-topped table with banquette bench seating on two sides. The show-stopping coffered ceiling was custom designed and features a highlighted central area in a circular design. The area behind the range has marble subway tile and the other backsplash areas are raised wood panels giving a furniture quality to this homey space. The dishwasher and large Sub-Zero refrigerator are also paneled in white wood while the microwave and 48" range is stainless steel. The prior cherry kitchen from the late 1990's with Corian counters was re-invented as a entertainment/auxiliary kitchen in the lower level of the house.
