Inspiration for a contemporary hillside gravel landscaping in Los Angeles.

As part of a multi phase project, we designed the front foundation of this cape house in Osterville. We transplanted shrubs to other locations, installed a sea shell drip edge along the foundation and then planted native plants like winterberry, bearberry, and blueberry to play off the massive maintained woodland plantings throughout the property. We also added perennials and roses to add color throughout the season.

This was a foundation planting and walkway makeover. All the existing plantings ("Builders Special") were removed and a few were relocated. We are a firm believer in re-purposing existing plants when it makes sense.
The cement walk was removed and replaced with a pine hall paver walk.
Exciting architectural plants, broadleaf evergreens, birch trees and a flurry of re-blooming perennials gave excuse to design a serpentine walkway. A fun project that has 4 seasons of interest!

Project Year:2016
This LEED-certified project was a substantial rebuild of a 1960's home, preserving the original foundation to the extent possible, with a small amount of new area, a reconfigured floor plan, and newly envisioned massing. The design is simple and modern, with floor to ceiling glazing along the rear, connecting the interior living spaces to the landscape. The design process was informed by building science best practices, including solar orientation, triple glazing, rain-screen exterior cladding, and a thermal envelope that far exceeds code requirements.
