INTERIOR DESIGN BY SCOTT FLAX STUDIO, SANTA MONICA CALIFORNIA
Scott Flax is an architectural colorist and and interior designer active in Los Angeles.
INTERIORS WHERE PHOTOGRAPHED BY www.Johnellisphoto.com
This project was a complete remodel of a 1920s bungalow in the seaside town of Santa Monica, California.
The clients had always admired The Horatio Court complex in Santa Monica designed by Irving Gill in 1919 and had fallen in love with his architectural approach in this building. The design of the clients' new house is not a literal reproduction; instead, it is inspired by Gill's work, with the goal of creating a warm contemporary feeling coupled with an old world charm. The original bungalow was a total tear down. The new living room at the front of the house was moved closer to the sidewalk and shielded from the street with an elevated yard and soft hedges. The master bedroom on the second floor is set back almost 30 feet to distance it from the elementary school across the street. The bedroom is further buffered from noise with a walled patio that opens it to the glorious outdoors while maintaining a complete sense of privacy. The staggered planes of these new walls gives the façade a scale that fits well with the neighborhood.
This project was a team effort with the owners, from the interiors and colors to the construction supervision. The success of the project is a result of that true collaborative effort.

A 4,500 square foot addition in a contemporary vernacular style to a house in the Hollywood Hills, in the Laurel Canyon area.
The addition was made of brick and steel, with an emphasis on sustainability - making it energy efficient with passive solar strategies, concrete floors with radiant heating, and green finishes throughout. The house has 4 levels, 5 bedrooms, an office and a separate loft for a second home office or guest apartment. The addition was nestled on the side of the lot to take advantage of the views and the beautiful nature around it.

A lovely small one story bungalow in the arts and craft style was the original house.
An addition of an entire second story and a portion to the back of the house to accommodate a growing family, for a 4 bedroom 3 bath new house family room and music room.
The owners a young couple from central and South America, are movie producers
The addition was a challenging one since we had to preserve the existing kitchen from a previous remodel and the old and beautiful original 1901 living room.
The stair case was inserted in one of the former bedrooms to access the new second floor.
The beam structure shown in the stair case and the master bedroom are indeed the structure of the roof exposed for more drama and higher ceilings.
The interiors where a collaboration with the owner who had a good idea of what she wanted.
