This residence is a complete remodel of the exterior of this fabulous home in Los Angeles.
The entire hillside was overgrown with dry and woody plants, and the clients were looking for a striking and beautiful front yard with water conscious plant materials. They also wanted to have an elegant ground cover treatment. We proposed 2 different design ideas using the similar types of sculptural plant materials with various colored pebbles contrasting one another to define planting areas, and walkways.
The final design incorporates succulents, groundcover, pebbles and water features to accentuate the entry courts. There are 2 fountains in the 2 main areas of the front yard landscape.

Creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) is an evergreen, low growing ground cover that is extremely low maintenance. It is tolerant of a wide range of conditions from sunny to part shady and with very dry to normal soil. This photo was taken just a few months after installation of one-gallon size plants. The fast growth and explosion of spring color is due to providing optimum conditions. We prepared the soil in the area 6" deep rather than planting in hard compacted clay. The client was amazed and delighted that we could turn this problem area into the envy of the neighborhood in just a few months. With another years growth, this ground cover will be a solid beautiful mass of drifting spring color. Photographer: Danna Cain, Home & Garden Design, Inc.

Lagoon-side property in the Bel Marin Keys, Novato, CA. Entertaining and enjoying the views were a primary design goal for this project. The project includes a large camaru deck with built-in seating. The concrete steps and pavers lead down to the water's edge. I included a sunken patio on one side and a beautiful Buddha statue on the other, surrounded by succulents and other low-water, contemporary plantings. I also used Dymondia ground cover to create a natural pathways within the garden. Featured plants: Achillea 'Coronation Gold (Yarrow), Euphorbia 'Blackbird', Lavenders, Lion's Tail and Penstemon heterophyllus.

Low maintenance, drought resistant and salt tolerant plantings were used in mass and clumps.
