Chicago Rooftop decks are challenging. This small but well thought out deck space is just the right size to enjoy some free time.

Garden Stories
This garden was created with four-legged creatures in mind. An extended informal paio area was created using decomposed granite edged in tumbled bluestone, increasing the areas for enthusiastic puppy play. A cedar garden shelter was installed creating a visual destination, space for contemplation for owner and Newfie.
The planting design is mostly native, with the exception of tough groundcovers (Epimediums), and grasses. Low-growing grasses and sedges soften the design, pulling together all the elements. Carex divulsa, and Sesleria autumnalis are two of my favorite: tough as nails, versatile (sun/shade), green almost year round, and tolerant of root competition. This style, I like to call Woodland Naturalism.

The "secret ingredient" in organic container gardens: worm castings with live worms. Red compost worms convert organic nutrients in potting soils into plant-available form, and the last chamber of the worm gut is loaded with beneficial bacteria and fungi that boost plant immunity, cycle nutrients, and increase the water-holding capacity of the potting soil.
