This client's home backs up to a beautiful native Beech and Tulip woodland with an intermittent stream running through the middle of the site. After mistakenly over-clearing the natural forest saplings, the once lush woods was now bare. Called in to help re-vegetate the woodland, we designed and created a new path network through the woodland so that the client could enjoy and experience their new garden. Planted with large masses of native perennials, shade grasses and spring bulbs this back yard is now lush once again.

The Intermittent stream along an un-usable side yard is flanked by Allen Block segmented concrete block walls. This sensitive area went through rigorous review and permitting prior to construction. The home owner wanted to reclaim this part of the property and create a feature out of an eyesore. Silver Sceptre Sedge lines the toe of the walls. Each wall end is accented with Dwarf Hameln Grass, Rotstrahlbusch Switch Grass, and Moudry Fountain Grass. The top of the wall was finished with a Teucrium chamaedrys also know as Wall Germander or False Boxwood. This creates a nice purple flowering hedge that does not obstruct the view of the walls.

With the combination of convective heat, radiant heat and reduced depth dimension, the 564 SS gas fireplace is ideal for zone heating in bedrooms, dens and intimate spaces. This fireplace features 564 square inches of high quality, high clarity tempered glass that comes standard with the 2015 ANSI-compliant invisible safety screen, increasing the overall safety of this fireplace for you and your family. The realistic “wood like” flame, along with the heat output can be controlled by the convenient Comfort Control™ gas system, which lets you enjoy your fireplace year-round. This allows you to turn off part of the burner with the push of a button to really turn down the heat while maintaining the fire and glowing embers.
The new Intermittent Pilot Ignition (IPI) allows you to run the 564 SS gas fireplace in either standing pilot mode- or in electronic ignition mode. In standing pilot mode the pilot flame stays on, which is ideal in cold climates where it is important to maintain a draft for proper operation. In electronic ignition mode the pilot flame goes out when the fireplace is turned off, saving you precious fuel and money and making the 564 SS one of the most “green” gas fireplaces you can own.

A private children’s foundation hired award-winning architecture firm, Christoff : Finio Architects, to renovate and remodel the classical-style townhouse structure into a modern and light-filled headquarters. Christoff : Finio contacted Hans to develop a planting plan for the intimate, rear courtyard gardens as well as a planting scheme for the front tree bed. We carefully selected plant material that could thrive in an extremely low-light environment while providing seasonal interest and color as a counterpoint to the modern interior. Herbaceous flowering and evergreen plants were selected to drift through each other with intermittent vertical accents, creating a lush courtyard border.

This Kiawah marsh front home in the “Settlement” was sculpted into its unique setting among live oaks that populate the long, narrow piece of land. The unique composition afforded a 35-foot wood and glass bridge joining the master suite with the main house, granting the owners a private escape within their own home. A helical stair tower provides an enchanting secondary entrance whose foyer is illuminated by sunshine spilling from three floors above.
