The owners of this 1930’s craftsman home in West Lafayette were ready to fall in love with their home all over again. To do so, they had to remove the giraffe-inspired flooring, dated wallpaper, and stucco soffits. Beyond the aesthetic appeal of a retro style kitchen design, these homeowners turned to Riverside Construction to plan their kitchen remodel for maximum efficiency—to create useful and efficient storage space, larger countertops, and improve traffic flow.
This complete kitchen gut and remodel involved tearing down walls, including removing a small partition near the stove, to gain much needed square footage. The existing peninsula was relocated to the opposite side of the kitchen, and the range and refrigerator exchanged places for improved functionality. White Shaker style Wellborn cabinets, yellow Retro “Big Chill” appliances and a retro pendant light/fan combo by Fanimation rounded out this bright and airy kitchen remodel.

Completed in 2010 this 1950's Ranch transformed into a modern family home with 6 bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths. Concrete floors and counters and gray stained cabinetry are warmed by rich bold colors. Public spaces were opened to each other and the entire second level is a master suite.

The project involved opening the ceiling on the ground floor of a 1930s duplex and replacing the plaster finish with a gypsum ceiling system. Aluminum electrical wiring was also replaced to conform to current standards, and the existing lighting was exchanged for new pot lights in all rooms. Once the ceilings were opened, an acoustic, soundproofing insulation system was installed to absorb interior noise from the second floor of the duplex. The soundproofing system consists of blown wool insulation, padded with a thin layer of air between it and the gypsum ceiling finish, along with the installation of resilient bars.

__________
Kent Blaxill
Glaziers from East Anglian company Kent Blaxill have signed off a complex reglazing contract that involved reconditioning and reinstalling 10 large Victorian rooflights on the grade II listed Sudbury Library.
It was a unique and challenging project with each piece of glass having to be individually cut and fitted, and with every detail having to be approved by English Heritage.
The 9 sq m metal rooflight frames, each containing 108 pieces of individually shaped and sized glass, had to be dismantled into 12 separate segments and tagged accordingly as each lantern light is a unique size. The frames were then sent away for shot-blasting and repainting with seven coats of English Heritage-approved paint.
Once the rooflights had been reinstalled, a total of 1,080 individually cut replacement panes of 6mm toughened Grey Anti-Sun Solar Control glass were glazed into the frames. The Anti-Sun glass is tinted with a pigment to control heat and glare in the library below.
In all, it took four glaziers seven weeks to complete the specialist project on what was once the town’s Corn Exchange, built in 1841.

Neptune Swimming Pools
Our clients were undertaking a major renovation to their home. They were adding a modern extension and had inherited an old swimming pool that was dated and in need of a major overhaul. There were some unusual details on the pool with two full length steps above water level and a low skimmer box making the pool appear half empty. Their wish was to modernise the pool and add a spa.
The first challenge was they were living in Phoenix, Arizona, and were not returning prior to the project commencing, whilst also being on a tight timeline to ensure the project was finished before returning to Australia to live. All initial contact was via email and telephone, with ideas and images being exchanged constantly until all involved were convinced of the best outcome.
The design included a few major elements including:
• Adding a raised 4-sided infinity style spa with overspill gutter to one end of the pool
• Adding a raised feature wall to the rear of the pool to act as a planter
• Removing the dry steps by raising the level of the pool
• Removing the existing skimmer and replacing at a higher level to raise the water level.
Significant cutting of the existing structure was required, with dowelling new reinforcement before concrete placement and waterproofing any cold concrete joins.
A light colour palette was adopted to create a inviting swimming pool using a combination of white glass bead render and light blue glass mosaic tiles. The spa was fully tiled with a black mosaic to create a stark contrast and allow it to ‘pop’.
As well as structural and cosmetic changes the system was given a full hydraulic overhaul with all plumbing lines renewed and pool equipment bought up to the modern standard. The pool now has energy efficient pumps and is fully operational via the clients smartphones.
The complete overhaul was an overwhelming success with the pool transforming from a dull pond like structure to an open and inviting space including a spa for year round use and relaxation.
