Designed in 1949 by Pietro Belluschi this Northwest style house sits adjacent to a stream in a 2-acre garden. The current owners asked us to design a new wing with a sitting room, master bedroom and bath and to renovate the kitchen. Details and materials from the original design were used throughout the addition. Special foundations were employed at the Master Bedroom to protect a mature Japanese maple. In the Master Bath a private garden court opens the shower and lavatory area to generous outside light. This project reimagines an under-used back yard in Portland, Oregon, creating an urban garden with an adjacent writer’s studio. Taking inspiration from Japanese precedents, we conceived of a paving scheme with planters, a cedar soaking tub, a fire pit, and a seven-foot-tall cedar fence. A maple tree forms the focal point and will grow to shade the yard. Board-formed concrete planters house conifers, maples and moss, appropriate to the Pacific Northwest climate. This is a different view of the tea house. The low bamboo fence helps to define the relation of the tea house to the garden. The ridge roof architectural style (kirizuma) is very evident in this photo. The roof has layered cedar shingles and is topped at the ridge with Japanese ceramic tiles.

A bird house is the focal point of these back yard gardens. The post height ensures plenty of room for tall perennials. The shed has attained a lovely patina including moss growth on the roof. We needed a bridge to cross the dry creek bed, so I designed a version of a Japanese yatsuhashi, or zig zag, bridge. It is clad in concrete backer board. I wanted to simulate a granite mountain plateau with a boulder peak. The client purchased the concrete lantern which perfectly complements the entrance to this woodland garden. Photo by Jay Sifford

A series of outdoor garden rooms — each created based on the site's topography — pull the architecture of this beautiful Georgian home into the landscape. The spaces open and close as you walk through the site, which empties intoa concrete swimming pool draped in lawn and accented by a James Carter-designed open-air pavillion at one end. These outdoor rooms are terraced with native stone walls, the most dramatic of which is the elliptical boxwood garden with an allee of Winter King Hawthornes connecting it to the pool garden. GLA took meticulous care to retain as many of the mature boxwoods and trees as possible, evidenced by the 30-foot-tall Japanese Maple. It had been slated for demolition before we convinced the client that it was worth the time and effort to simply relocated the beautiful tree. It now sides 20 feet from its original location in a side garden — a splendid specimen visible from the front of the home.
