Here are some practical tips for creating a beautiful, comfortable and thoughtful living room design.
The living room in the house is the place where, as the name suggests, receives guests. However, the owners themselves relax here, spending time in front of the TV or a book, with drinks, pleasant conversation and other activities. Therefore, the living room should be the most comfortable place in your home.
The place of the sofa in the design of the living room
The sofa does not need to be placed in a draft. This means that it should not be on an imaginary line from window to door - if you drew a floor plan, it will just be easy to trace.
1. The sofa in front of the TV, diagonally from the door, is a great location. As if inviting you to sit down :)
2. Sofa near the door. A good solution if you often have overnight guests.
3. Corner sofa in the living room. Best placed in the farthest corner from the door. This will make the room look more spacious.
Correct opening of the door in the living room. Inward or outward?
Open inward or outward? There is no clear rule here, because everything depends on the layout and on the furniture placed. The main thing is that the door leaf opens freely and does not interfere with entering and exiting the room. Also, the door should not interfere with free access to the closet or dressing room.
TV in living room size and location. Location.
The TV is placed on the wall opposite to the sofa - this is the most logical and reasonable place for it in the living room. Moreover, the distance to it does not really matter: modern TV models can be placed close to the sofa.
Cabinet or bracket? To your taste. The main thing is that the television zone looks neat and presentable. Provide in advance a cable channel in which all the wires and numerous sockets for the receiver, modem, set-top box, sound bar will hide. Nothing spoils a design like sticking wires!
Height from the floor. It is optimal to place the TV 1 m from the floor to the middle of the screen - this is exactly the level of the eyes of a seated person.
Diagonal size. If there is a financial opportunity, consider options from 50 inches - smaller screens look lonely and lonely on an empty wall.
Living room furniture.
Armchair. Often the chair becomes an accent item in the interior, then its shade, and sometimes its shape, differ from the rest of the furniture. When choosing a chair, be guided also by your habits: for example, it will be more convenient to climb up with your feet and read a book in an armchair with dimensions of 90x90 cm, and you can “just sit comfortably” in a fireplace chair with a high back, comfortable armrests and with a seat 80x80 cm.
TV stand. Large TV stands are no longer as relevant as they used to be, when it was necessary to store a player, cassettes and discs there. For now, a console table or a narrow elegant pedestal is enough.
Coffee table. Nice piece of furniture that creates a cozy atmosphere. Some models, if necessary, can be transformed into a more spacious table for receiving guests - however, finding comfortable and beautiful specimens is not easy, plus they usually cost a lot.
Rack. An extremely useful type of furniture. :) Firstly, a large number of decor items can be beautifully placed on the rack. And secondly, it can also play the role of a light through partition, which divides the room into zones and does not select light at the same time. This is a very big plus for small apartments.
Fireplace. Here we are talking about electric fireplaces. Some of them come with a humidifier and heated, so 3-in-1 models can be very helpful. Fireplace portals have different styles: classic, antique, modern. Inconsistency with the general style of the living room can greatly spoil the impression of the room, so be careful with creativity. Sizing is an important issue. A large wall with a high ceiling also needs a proportionate fireplace; in horror, a small portal will look lonely and ridiculous.

Architectonic project, interior and lighting design: Arch. Simone Micheli Location: Lambrate - Milan
150 Sq.m.
Year of realization: 2013
Photos by Francesca Mandelli D’Agostini
Marco Balestri House, designed by Simone Micheli, is located in the new urban district of Lambrate - in Milan - and it is one of the most important interventions of regeneration of the area, that has been characterized in last years by vitality and great development. The space is conceived as free, functional and clear, becoming a place where every- one can live his own everyday life among fashion, design, culture and human relations. It is an open space in which lively spirit and the desire of meeting friends merge together the intimacy of places with the exibility of a reality that is always changing. Simone Micheli wanted to give birth to an energetic space that is able to tell and receive needs and habits of who is living and using it. Objects and surfaces, free from their traditional functions, are settled in the space in new ways, showing their primary scope. The use of materials and furniture of pure and essential shapes - focused on creating a different dimension out of social conventions - is a forward step to underline the importance of quality of living and of freedom of ways of life. The result is an eco-sustainable house, functional, modern and extremely bright thanks to the many breaks in walls and to the whiteness of furniture and surface, electri ed by vivid colourful notes and led lights.
The smooth concrete pavement walks along living area till to the kitchen, creating a uid and interactive space in which different settings offer sensations of order and clearness.
White woven couches uctuate in front of the oval tv holder. More furniture of geometric shape, table and container furniture of IT-IS Gruppo Euromobil Collection, designed by Simone Micheli, complete the house, giving birth to a space in continuous de nition, where nothing is static.
A loft is above the kitchen area, creating an intimate, but full of light, place of relax and from which you can enter in upper oor composed by bedrooms and bath area. Spaces of the second oor follow the same logic of functionality and no conventions of the rst oor, becoming softer and more comfortable as you move to bedrooms. The three- dimensionality of bath breaks traditional stereotypes, recreating itself starting from real needs of contemporary human beings . Essential and geometric red columns characterized the spaces of the house and they contribute to expand its uniqueness.

Interior and product design for a specialty tea company
P & T ́s mission is to make fine teas and tea culture more accessible and rewarding to a broader audience.
On freestanding presentation cubes outfitted with sliding drawers the individual teas are displayed in a practical fashion with accompanying information, logically organized according to their degree of oxidation.
Leaving the conventional `apothecary´ over the counter mold behind, customers are invited to smell the individual teas on display, read about their origins, production processes and their tasting characteristics or sample a particular tea, expertly brewed and served by a 'teaist' at one of the tea tasting stations in the Chinese and Taiwanese style of Gong-Fu.
This also spatially sets up the presentation of tea in the center while accessories are providing the backdrop, placed in wall shelves and lined up to form a continuous belt tying all rooms together.
The presentation cubes are accompagnied by light wire frames that host the functional lightning and swarms of traditional chinese lanterns which give the installation a poetic note. By responding to the cubic furniture in the 3rd dimension these frames put once more the focus on the laid out teas and objects.
Chinese five-elements-theory has influenced the choice of colors, which links water, the basic element for brewing tea, to black and the minerals it contains to white. All colors range between these extreme poles in shades of grey and employ a quiet environment that stands aside, allowing the tender colors of the natural tea leaves and the bright colored glazing of the accessories to speak for itself.

Winner of a Cornish Buildings Group Award 2015
Barn Conversion in Cornwall – Case study of the conversion of a Grade II* Medieval Tithe Barn to a family home.
The Bazeley Partnership is often asked to provide professional architectural advice and assistance to home owners seeking to carry out a challenging conservation building project in Cornwall and Devon. This case study looks at the conversion of a Grade II* (2 star) Medieval Tithe Barn in Cornwall to a family home.
Our clients explain the project requirements here:
“In 2010 My wife and I purchased a former riding stables business and small holding, which came with a 13th Century, Grade II* (2 star) listed medieval Tithe Barn.
The barn was on the national register at risk and is one of the only surviving examples of a Medieval roof on a barn of this type in Cornwall- hence its star listed status.
The previous owners and other prospective buyers had attempted to secure a planning consent on the barn, but failed. We were advised that planning was unlikely and we should avoid taking on the challenge by both our solicitor and other planning professionals.
However, having met with Martin Back from the Bazeley Partnership we found great comfort in his knowledge and experience, and his approach to secure planning permission seemed logical.
In 2011 we appointed The Bazeley Partnership and through their professional and methodical approach, excellent design and detailed application, we secured the support of English Heritage to save our special building. This was a very rare example of a Grade 2 Star listed building being granted residential planning status and thus enabled us to fulfil our dream of turning it into an amazing home.
Throughout the sensitive conversion the Bazeley Partnership have played a crucial role in aiding and assisting with the discharge of various planning and listed buildings conditions and general design and technical advice.
Since then we have also appointed Martin and his team to act for us on numerous applications, all of which have been handled in the same professional fashion with a successful outcome.
If you are looking for a professional, pro-active and dynamic firm to help create your dream home then The Bazeley Partnership is the definitely worthy of the job. Thanks guys for all you’ve done!”
We’re delighted to be acting as Architects on this project and look forward to its completion.
If you have a barn conversion or conservation building project in Cornwall or Devon and you would like professional advice from our Architects, please get in touch. We can also help and advise on the changes to permitted development rights for agricultural buildings.
