2018 DESIGN OVATION HONORABLE MENTION/ TRADITIONAL LIVING ROOM. Years after a major remodel, this couple contacted the designer as they had for 25 yrs to work with the contractor to create this Living Area Addition. To warm up the room and bring the ceiling down, the designer recommended the use of wood planks on the ceiling, along with 2 large-scale iron chandeliers. The double row of windows brings the outdoors in, providing wonderful daylight. The wall space above the opening to the adjacent Library was the perfect location for canvas panels inspired by the wife’s favorite Japanese artwork and commissioned by the designer with a local artist. The room provides plenty of seating for watching TV, reading or conversation. The open space between the sofa table and library allows room for the client to explore her heritage through Japanese Sword practicing or her Ikebana creations using their landscape. Oriental inspiration was used in the fabrics and accessories throughout. Photos by Michael Hunter
Simply Baths & Kitchens
When designer Rachel Peterson of Simply Baths, Inc. first met this young, stylish couple at their house they had a small handful of items they knew they really wanted in their master bathroom: a freestanding tub, a chandelier, a larger shower and more counter space. But the truth was, the bath needed a major face-lift. The space was outdated and lacked personality. It certainly didn't reflect the homeowners and their elegant aesthetic. The combination of stone and wood tiles lends just enough of a rustic flair to bring a little bit of the outdoors in and while helping to balance some of the feminine elements in the room with simple masculine touches.

Placed upon a sunlit grassy knoll facing Colorado’s San Juan, and San Miguel mountain ranges, with Utah’s La Salle Mountains to the south, North Star Ranch overlooks an Aspen painted valley with touches of Ponderosa and Scrub Oak accents. The core of the structure was designed with large facades of glazing facing the southern views while the garage was rotated 45 degrees to work with the existing grades as well as minimize the impact of the garage pod as one approaches the home. The home was thoughtfully sited to nestle next to a several large existing Ponderosa Pines creating an intimate mountain setting.
Sustainable measures were discussed and implemented early during the design and construction process such as utilizing indigenous stone harvested from site for retaining walls and portions of the home’s veneer. Reclaimed materials were considered and implemented wherever possible, ranging from historic wood directly from “The Wizard of Oz” production set to miscellaneous parts from old mining carts historic to the area. The historic wood was given a patch work effect combining horizontal planks with a reverse vertical board and batten with a mixture rusted metal accents on certain walls to introduce a visual exception from the consistency of the wood. Wood and steel structural members such as timber trusses, knee braces, purlins, beams and columns are exposed throughout the exterior and interior as a way of celebrating the structure and telling the story of how the home is constructed.
As guests arrive, they are welcomed by an entry bridge constructed from a single solid stone slab 2 1/2 feet thick spanning over a calm flowing stream. The bridge is covered by an articulated gable element supported by ornate columns and connections tying directly to the stone slab. The layout of the interior is divided into separate living corridors; a master core witch houses the master suite, office, sitting room and exercise room with a separate stair connecting to all three levels. The centrally located kitchen was designed with several working and entertaining stations defined by multiple islands and a floor to ceiling wall of glass in lieu of wall lined cabinets to allow for maximum natural light in the major public areas. The core living spaces are linked via an internal trestle bridge designed on location and constructed from old mine carts as the walking surface and the reclaimed steel wheels as a structural detail. The rest of the home is detailed throughout with ornamental ironwork, granites, tiles, etc. all enhancing the modern like aesthetic with an historic mining influence.

This Cape Cod kitchen with wood countertops underwent an enormous transformation that added 75 square feet and relocated all three legs of the work triangle: sink, refrigerator, and range. To accommodate traffic flow through the space, the upper corner of the kitchen was made into a pantry/baking center, and the remaining space was used to create the work triangle. The look of the cabinets was kept simple, but small flourishes such as crown molding throughout the room and staggered cabinet heights add visual interest. Some of the cabinets include glass doors with grids that match the windows, helping to pull together the design as a whole. Jenerik Images Photography

This beautiful kitchen remodel and renovation is timeless and classic with a nod to the coastal influences of living in sunny Newport Beach. The wonderful textures in the granite and backsplash materials add so much depth and interest with these rich textiles. Photos taken from a private photographer in Orange County.

This remodel of a mid century modern home was focused on improving the flow and functionality of the kitchen while respecting the existing design style. We removed the wall separating the living area from the kitchen and installed recycled chalkboard countertops on some great new cabinets by Kerf design. New aluminum windows added much needed cross ventilation while complementing the existing architecture. New appliances, lighting and flooring rounded out the remodel.

Now you can see for yourselves! The difference is far beyond belief! The staircase is now the major show-stopper! The finishing touches of the reupholstered chairs sitting just below the staircase, along with the chandelier in the entry hall and the upgraded lighting in the upstairs hall are just a few of the improvements making this home so perfectly done.
The rest of the furnishings came from their first home located in Yorba Linda, which we designed as well. Using quality pieces with the talents of our interior design firm, gives longevity to your projects. This Yorba Linda home is now ready for any occasion!

This kitchen was part of a major house renovation including a family room and master bath addition. The new kitchen, located roughly in the same position as the original kitchen, was expanded in size to accommodate a large island for this growing family of four. The homeowner's goal was to stay true to the home's 1920's bungalow style. This was accomplished by the selection of white shaker style inset cabinetry, along with a mix of soapstone counter tops and a stunning piece of white calacutta marble that tops the large island. Architectural details including a wood topped hutch and a shelf over the windows were included to display the homeowner's collection of antique pottery and help complete the vintage feel. Professional grade appliances keep the kitchen working hard for this growing family.

This classic, inviting kitchen marries dark and light, organic and industrial, and traditional with touches of modernity to yield a most functional, beautiful space. White Macauba mined quartzite countertops masquerade as marble without the worry of staining or maintenance. The TV cabinet at the left complements the full overlay recessed panel cabinets of the kitchen with completely planar inset doors in Java stain on cherry wood.
