Chez Chaouen is inspired by the town of Chefchaouen in Morocco.
They are two flats located in Fondazione Prada, an emerging neighborhood in Milan, now the center of the cutting-edge design for which the city has gained world fame.
The neighborhood, once populated by factories and production plants, is now experiencing significant urban development and social gentrification, turning it into a prominent cultural pole. So, this area is acquiring a new face, attracting not only art and architecture, but also fashion, music, and cinema. For this reason, many large companies such as Prada, Kering, and Fastweb established their headquarters here. Recently renamed Fondazione Prada after the inauguration of the homonymous art gallery, the neighborhood will host the future Olympic Village of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games.
A deep transformation of the district began about 30 years ago, when a huge migratory flow from North Africa brought many new citizens to Italy. Among those people that headed to Milan, several settled down in this specific neighborhood, and it became a North-African land. They were born, among other things, strong problems of social integration and consequently politicized. However, the situation has evolved. Today, the children of those immigrants live in this area, as the so-called second generation who were born and raised here. Here, they have embraced their mixed cultural backgrounds by combining the North-African culture with the Western and Italian habits of their new environment.
Chez Chaouen is all about that and it wants to be part of this change. We want to create a unique piece of architecture, with the goal of telling the story of the current transformation and integration of the district.
Chefchaouen is the town that inspired this project, it is located near the northern coast of the country facing the Mediterranean Sea, at the top of the Atlas' hills. What makes the city unique? To start, all the town's houses are painted by using only one stunning blue color. Its color particularity made the town famous all over the world and got the name of "Blue Pearl of Morocco".
Chez Chaouen project entails two flats, of 50 and 70 square meters respectively. The modern architecture pieces’ design, on one hand, inspired by the contemporary European design of which Milan is an international symbol. On the other, its most original characterization derives from the Moroccan soul; in fact each element of the apartments is painted exclusively of blue, even the piano, located inside one of the two.
