When a family living in Singapore decided to purchase a New York City pied-à-terre, they settled on the historic Langham Place, a 60-floor building along 5th Ave which features a mixture of permanent residencies and 5-star hotel suites. Immediately after purchasing the condo, they reached out to Decor Aid, and tasked us with designing a home that would reflect their jet-setting lifestyle and chic sensibility.

Connecting to the historic Tiffany Building at 404 5th Ave, the exterior of Langham Place is a combination of highly contemporary architecture and 1920’s art deco design. And with this highly unique architecture, came highly angular, outward leaning floor-to-ceiling windows, which would prove to be our biggest design challenge.
One of the apartment’s quirks was negotiating an uneven balance of natural light throughout the space. Parts of the apartment, such one of the kids’ bedrooms, feature floor-to-ceiling windows and an abundance of natural light, while other areas, such as one corner of the living room, receive little natural light.
By sourcing a combination of contemporary, low-profile furniture pieces and metallic accents, we were able to compensate for apartment’s pockets of darkness. A low-profile beige sectional from Room & Board was an obvious choice, which we complemented with a lucite console and a bronze Riverstone coffee table from Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams.
Circular tables were placed throughout the apartment in order to establish a design scheme that would be easy to walk through. A marble tulip table from Sit Down New York provides an opulent dining room space, without crowding the floor plan. The finishing touches include a sumptuous swivel chair from Safavieh, to create a sleek, welcoming vacation home for this international client.

In addition to the large, white sectional are two conversation chairs with gray floral motifs and chrome-finished bases. Lighting includes modern ceiling lights and a simple modern floor lamp that sits off in a far corner.

Inspired by the vivid tones of the surrounding waterways, we created a calming sanctuary. The grand open concept required us to define areas for sitting, dining and entertaining that were cohesive in overall design. The thread of the teal color weaves from room to room as a constant reminder of the beauty surrounding the home. Lush textures make each room a tactile experience as well as a visual pleasure. Not to be overlooked, the outdoor space was designed as additional living space that coordinates with the color scheme of the interior.

It’s all about detail in this living room! To contrast with the tailored foundation, set through the contemporary furnishings we chose, we added color, texture, and scale through the home decor. Large display shelves beautifully showcase the client’s unique collection of books and antiques, drawing the eyes up to the accent artwork.
Durable fabrics will keep this living room looking pristine for years to come, which make cleaning and maintaining the sofa and chairs effortless and efficient.

Contrast is the key to this gorgeous transitional family room. Soft greige walls are in contrast with the platinum silk draperies and charcoal sofa. Custom lounge chairs in gold ikat add a touch of glamour to this formal living space. Modern art keeps it fresh and fun.

Though DIY living room makeovers and bedroom redecorating can be an exciting undertaking, these projects often wind up uncompleted and with less than satisfactory results. This was the case with our client, a young professional in his early 30’s who purchased his first apartment and tried to decorate it himself. Short on interior décor ideas and unhappy with the results, he decided to hire an interior designer, turning to Décor Aid to transform his one-bedroom into a classy, adult space. Our client already had invested in several key pieces of furniture, so our Junior Designer worked closely with him to incorporate the existing furnishings into the new design and give them new life.
Though the living room boasted high ceilings, the space was narrow, so they ditched the client’s sectional in place of a sleek leather sofa with a smaller footprint. They replaced the dark gray living room paint and drab brown bedroom paint with a white wall paint color to make the apartment feel larger. Our designer introduced chrome accents, in the form of a Deco bar cart, a modern chandelier, and a campaign-style nightstand, to create a sleek, contemporary design. Leather furniture was used in both the bedroom and living room to add a masculine feel to the home refresh.

The aqua high gloss ceiling, subtle tone-on-tone trellis wallpaper, small geometric carpet, and bulls eye mirror all help to give this formal living room an open and airy feel. A pair of velvet tufted sofas also make the sitting area feel more luxurious.

A pre-war West Village bachelor pad inspired by classic mid-century modern designs, mixed with some industrial, traveled, and street style influences. Our client took inspiration from both his travels as well as his city (NY!), and we really wanted to incorporate that into the design. For the living room we painted the walls a warm but light grey, and we mixed some more rustic furniture elements, (like the reclaimed wood coffee table) with some classic mid-century pieces (like the womb chair) to create a multi-functional kitchen/living/dining space. Using a versatile kitchen cart with a mirror above it, we created a small bar area, which was definitely on our client's wish list!
