Square Roots uses sustainably-sourced French Oak obtained from PEFC®-certified (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) mills in Burgundy, France. Many designs feature live-edge solid oak slabs – simple and light - showcasing the organic spirit and remarkable personality of the tree. The finishes have been developed from years of experimentation at the factory or come from old recipes handed down by antique restorers. They range from: seared, fumed or simply, raw. Each piece is finally coated with hard-wearing vegetable-based finishing oil to give it a natural look.

It often happens that a remodel is planned when appliances or plumbing fixtures fail and need to be replaced. This small 5' x 8' bath remodel started with the need to place a failed water closet. We wanted to achieve the remodel in a budget friendly manner so kept the tub which was still in good repair. Everything else was worn and tired so all surfaces were replaced.

Nouvel Kitchen and Bath
Today’s kitchen is a place that offers not only food for your stomach, but also “food for your eyes”. The owners of this residence, are sensitive to both of these functions.
After the client’s approval to “borrow” a little space (24”D) from their garage was obtained, they received a new Mud Room combined with a “Green lab” for their bonsai-hobby, new entrance to the back yard and a bigger updated kitchen.
The small appliances here work like decorative details. The big ones (i.e. 48” refrigerator) are concealed with panels. The contrast cabinet finishes, tile floor, wood ceiling with flashed LED lights converted this kitchen to an enjoyable entertainment space. Guests can rotate here around a custom designed granite island-bar.

Brain Factory - Architecture & Design
2018 Roma, Italy
LOCATION: Roma
AREA: 65 sq. m.
TYPE: Realized project
“Might we suggest that… if the pulsing LED begins to drive you crazy, turn the box round so the LED faces to the wall or the back of your shelf” questo è il suggerimento leggibile all’interno del cartoncino dell’album Pulse dei Pink Floyd da cui scaturisce il concept creativo di questo appartamento di 65 mq situato a Roma: un progetto di interni vivo e pulsante che ben rispecchia l’animo dei proprietari, un musicista e una dottoressa in attesa del primo figlio.
“Might we suggest that… if the pulsing LED begins to drive you crazy, turn the box round so the LED faces to the wall or the back of your shelf” this is the readable suggestion within the Pulse album by Pink Floyd gives rise to the creative concept of this 65 square meter apartment located in Rome: a living and pulsating interior project that well reflects the soul of the owners, a musician and a doctor waiting for their first child. The renovation project has completely upset the living area of the apartment, preferring a large open space obtained by eliminating a long corridor between the kitchen and the living room, while the design proposal in the sleeping area leaves unchanged the two bedrooms and the bathroom. With the new planimetric distribution, right from the entrance, there is a creative emotion that refers to the sensations experienced in perceiving for the first time the heartbeat of the future child: in fact, the rows of artificial grass at various heights recall the display of the heart rate. A part of the living room has been raised and completely covered in oak parquet, to act as a stage for the grand piano, the focal point of the entire living area. Used like a backdrop to the piano there is an absolute white wall on which a decorative painting has been placed that creates a play of lights and shadows. Of great visual and architectural impact was the choice of lights: black lacquered circles of different diameters stand out at various heights spreading LED light on the ceiling, harmoniously, reminding the album cover with its LED buttons. The black lacquered metal shelves spread the light on the wall, emphasizing the material texture of the painting. The kitchen is minimal, essential, with the graft of the table that seems to float thanks to the light and elegant support of the glass leg. Everything is played on the tones of white and black, recalling the piano keyboard and the creative impulse that, when it is so strong, does not allow nuances.

The site is the former rear garden of a cottage in a central village location. The client had obtained planning permission to construct a new dwelling in the rear yard. We prepared a different design, that maximised the potential of the site, the long range views and sunlight, and gained planning permission. The house has large areas of glazing on the south and west elevations to maximise the views and is on two levels to suit the sloping site.
BB Partnership Ltd
Grade II listed detached residential property that dates from 1832
BBP were appointed to remodel and refurbish the house into a single family dwelling for the high-end residential market. BBP obtained approval to demolish part of the existing listed structure and to construct two-storey side extensions either side of the retained structure, a frameless glass extension to the rear and a basement below the garden.
A mews house, linked to the rear garden, also forms part of the scheme to give the development a total floor area of 11,500 sq ft..
The accommodation in the main house comprises six bedrooms, passenger lift, media room, swimming pool, gym, sauna, steam room and games room.
The interior was designed in collaboration with Anna Owens Designs who also furnished the house.

In March 2017 I was approached by a couple who had recently purchased a property in Lowther Village, a conservation village on the edge of the Lowther Castle estate. The property needed completely refurbishing before it could be used as a second home and holiday let. The property is grade II* listed and in addition to designing and project managing the refurbishment I obtained the listed building consent on their behalf. The application was submitted in May 2017 and approved at the end of July 2017. Work was completed in October 2017 and the property is now available for rental via Cumbrian Cottages.

Lockdown project completed. Phew! I was fed up with our oak kitchen table, but painting it left it looking tacky. Before lockdown I had obtained some top quality shagreen printed leather (fake manta ray skin) and The Furniture Clinic stripped, painted and covered the table for me. It created a unique piece and brightened the recently decorated room considerably. During lockdown, I stripped, sanded, painted and lacquered each chair and these have now been finished with some bespoke shagreen seat pads. Today, our long awaited plain Habitat bench was returned from The Furniture Clinic: I had stripped and painted this before lockdown, and it has now had an offcut of leather incorporated as a fixed seat-pad. In a world where we are overly wasteful I am delighted with the way these items have been upgraded and modernised in a driftwood-like coastal way. Now I just need to put some pads under the chair legs to stop the sound of them dragging on the floor!

Who wouldn’t love to have this striking seaside bedroom, with a hidden en-suite accessed via a seemingly normal cupboard door? The owners of this listed property did not know what they wanted to do with the room, and had a simple brief to create storage and an en-suite with a sense of modernity. I introduced them to various strong colours with the idea of complementing the coast with certain textures. They needed guidance, so ultimately I chose Valspar’s “On a Mission” paint for them, and designed bespoke wardrobes spray painted in the same colour. I also designed a headboard and side cupboards which were stained in a Wenge colour, and inlaid with shagreen (fake manta ray skin) to add a luxury texture, feel and sense of the sea.
Lighting is apparent in both obvious and hidden forms; behind the wardrobe cornice and shining up from inside the headboard lighting is concealed, and there are ultra-slick reading lights in antique bronze blending with the Wenge of the headboard which can be angled in multiple directions and delicately click on and off when opened. Bold, industrial antique bronze side lights complement the wardrobe furniture and statement dimmable starburst / sputnick lights offer a sun or star like appearance in the ceiling depending on brilliance. All obtained from Cotterell & Co Newcastle.
The en-suite required listed building planning consent to have the wall knocked through and now features octagonal tiles with a designer atticus heated towel rail, hidden lighting in a mirrored recessed shelf and touch free over basin mirror. The dark units also complement the colour of the bed furniture.
Top of the range white colonial plantation shutters (with retractable secluded black out blinds) from Shuttercraft Newcastle generate a well-appointed colonial feel, with the stark contrast of the white panelling sitting next to the blue walls as clouds would on a hot summer’s day. The tall “Florence” radiators have a traditional style yet modern sleekness to them and they nod to the shape of the shutters. A quality carpet from Global Flooring Studion in an oyster colour finishes the room, together with a Gallatin Karndene tile effect in the bathroom which has a variety of stoney / blue coastal tones.

For this recently moved in military family, their old rambler home offered plenty of area for potential improvement. An entire new kitchen space was designed to create a greater feeling of family warmth.
It all started with gutting the old rundown kitchen. The kitchen space was cramped and disconnected from the rest of the main level. There was a large bearing wall separating the living room from the kitchen and the dining room.
A structure recessed beam was inserted into the attic space that enabled opening up of the entire main level. A large L-shaped island took over the wall placement giving a big work and storage space for the kitchen.
Installed wood flooring matched up with the remaining living space created a continuous seam-less main level.
By eliminating a side door and cutting through brick and block back wall, a large picture window was inserted to allow plenty of natural light into the kitchen.
Recessed and pendent lights also improved interior lighting.
By using offset cabinetry and a carefully selected granite slab to complement each other, a more soothing space was obtained to inspire cooking and entertaining. The fabulous new kitchen was completed with a new French door leading to the sun room.
This family is now very happy with the massive transformation, and are happy to join their new community.

Salberg Property Ltd.
Salberg acquired a 3000 sq/ft property and obtained the necessary planning permissions to convert the space into two exclusive apartments. The new development was set within an adjoining pair of mews houses located within a quiet Bayswater mews. Through skilful design and attention to detail, we created two luxurious apartments.
Both apartments have private entrances, large open-plan living spaces, three double bedrooms and has the added benefit of the latest home automation and modern luxuries.
Alchemy Architecture
The challenges for this site included the need to integrate the existing European Brick Tudour style façade at the front of the property with a new modern extension at the back, but in a seamless way. The new design also needed to accommodate all seasons, and various levels of natural light, to ensure year-round use of the rear entertainment space. Although a difficult brief, our client’s clarity, courage and trust allowed us to transform a tricky brief into a practical, holistic and creative solution. The result included a large overhang angled roof structure, which flips up to capitalise on natural light. This, along with an oversized exterior retractable blind system, assisted in creating the perfect all season multi-use space—one that can be fully controlled to obtain the perfect balance of comfort in every weather condition.

A majestic ancient limestone portal is a prerequisite to any special home of any style.
We have sold a few of those rare and one of a kind stone portals for decades to a network of handpicked antique dealers globally and on occasions directly to a small discerning clientele that reads something like a Forbes 400 list including a few heads of states. Spread out on many continents, separated by oceans but joined by one philosophy.
We understand and cater to that school of thought that is as old as collecting itself. It's to have something unique and different then what could be easily obtained in a hardware store, because you're an individual and choose not to conform to the cookie cutter status quo of precast cement and poured concrete. The front of your home is a prologue to what's to come on the inside and tells a lot about who you are and what you chose to surround yourself with should be nothing by the best.

Clients wanted to give their existing more traditional looking kitchen a refreshing new more modern, lighter feel while still reusing existing cabinetry. We painted existing cabinetry a warm neutral gray, added new Cambria quartz counter tops and a new back splash. Clients loved the new overall look and feel and were really pleased not to incur the cost of having to purchase new cabinets to obtain it! They loved it so much we ended up painting the built in bar and bookcase in the living room which helped unify the two spaces.
