Raised garden beds offer visual interest whether full of ripe edibles or ready for planting. The White Sage in the foreground produces beautiful blooms that emerge from striking silver foliage to reach 6-10 feet. Its earthy scent attracts pollinators, and it is is a great addition to Thanksgiving meals.

Our Pasadena studio gave this bathroom a re-fresh so that our clients could relax and rejuvenate in its serene design language. The white and taupe color palette with hints of pale green creates a calming ambience, and the large tub is ideal for unwinding in and has a tub deck for scented candles and toiletries. A wall-mounted custom vanity offers ample storage and is complemented with a custom mirror. The contemporary flooring looks beautiful and serves a functional purpose, too, as it is slip-resistant.

This landscape is based on a painting by pioneering abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. The Art Garden method of Landscape Design is a process where the outdoor environment's design is based on the the work of a specific artist or work of art, or incorporates multiple art forms into the space, including sculpture, music, dance, performance art and experiential elements. The swirling shape of the front stones give the composition a sense of movement, while the variegated Sedum offer a structural contrast to the red wall, and can tolerate the hot dry microclimate of stone mulch and the concrete wall. Behind the wall is a massing of Hay Scented Fern, a lush bright green contrast to the red wall.
The red arching wall offers a high contrast backdrop to the sculptural fire pit, which is a cast iron sugar kettle from South Carolina. It’s rim sits on top of two of the boulders, while fitting into a notch of the third boulder, creating an asymmetrical, funky balance, typical of Kandinsky’s work.

Our client built a striking new home on the east slope of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. To complement the clean lines of the facade we designed a simple, elegant landscape that sets off the home rather than competing with the bold architecture.
Soft grasses offer contrast to the natural stone veneer, perennials brighten the mood, and planters add a bit of whimsy to the arrival sequence. On either side of the main entry, roof runoff is dramatically routed down the face of the home in steel troughs to biofilter planters faced in stone.
Around the back of the home, a small “leftover” space was transformed into a cozy patio terrace with bluestone slabs and crushed granite underfoot. A view down into, or across the back patio area provides a serene foreground to the beautiful views to Lake Washington beyond.
Collaborating with Thielsen Architects provided the owners with a sold design team--working together with one voice to build their dream home.

This 3200 square foot home features a maintenance free exterior of LP Smartside, corrugated aluminum roofing, and native prairie landscaping. The design of the structure is intended to mimic the architectural lines of classic farm buildings. The outdoor living areas are as important to this home as the interior spaces; covered and exposed porches, field stone patios and an enclosed screen porch all offer expansive views of the surrounding meadow and tree line.
The home’s interior combines rustic timbers and soaring spaces which would have traditionally been reserved for the barn and outbuildings, with classic finishes customarily found in the family homestead. Walls of windows and cathedral ceilings invite the outdoors in. Locally sourced reclaimed posts and beams, wide plank white oak flooring and a Door County fieldstone fireplace juxtapose with classic white cabinetry and millwork, tongue and groove wainscoting and a color palate of softened paint hues, tiles and fabrics to create a completely unique Door County homestead.

The sugar kettle water feature, centered on the front door is an exceptional element. Wisconsin granite cobbles with bluestone coping tie into the bluestone walk and the cobblestone Craftsman columns. Landscape design by Bob Hursthouse.

Overlooking the canal in Golden Beach 96 GB was designed around a 27 foot triple height space that would be the heart of this home. With an emphasis on the natural scenery, the interior architecture of the house opens up towards the water and fills the space with natural light and greenery.

This unique 2.75 acre property, located on the Roosevelt Channel on Captiva Island, was transformed from a barren construction site into a tropical garden that would rival some botanical gardens. The homeowners are garden enthusiasts and collaborated closely with Bob Walsh and the landscape team to create a variety of lush landscape gardens including; a Tropical Flowering Tree Garden, Moonlight & Scent Garden, Citrus & Edible Garden, Specimen Palm Gardens, Tropical Shade Gardens, Butterfly Gardens, and Waterfall Gardens with lagoon pools for Koi fish. Outdoor living was of primary consideration as well. The Seminole Indian Chickee Hut overlooks a private Island Beach with hammocks to offer a retreat for entertaining and relaxation while a 42 foot circular Stone Labyrinth is a place for meditation and contemplation. Moon and accent landscape lighting allow the numerous pathways and gardens to be enjoyed well beyond sunset.
