This was the home's master bedroom. It was quite small, but I was excited that this 100-year-old home had a master bath at all! The entire thing was blue. We yanked the old blue floor tiles and replaced them with this mosaic Carrara marble tile. As for the tile surrounding the tub and shower, we had it sprayed white, since it was in good condition. This cost about $300. A pedestal sink and medicine cabinet were added, as well as a cute, small chandelier and beadboard. This small guest bathroom in a condo on the beach desperately needed a complete overhaul. We took it to the studs. The space was long and narrow and problematic to begin with having only 7 ft ceilings. And, of course the client wanted a rain head! Yikes! To accomodate this need we recessed the rainhead in a ceiling “niche” of sorts and tiled it with the coordinating mosaic glass we used in other niches in the room. The client also requested a tub...and shower..but wanted us to be creative in finding the right one. The Neptune “Wind” tub fit the need perfectly. The challenge was how to hang a shower curtain as well as how to mount a tub filler...we used a kohler laminar spout coming from wall so it looks great as well as functioning just as we needed. The shower curtain dilemma is solved by using an old fashioned 25 dollar clothesline. It stretches out from one end to the other and the curtain hangs on it when needed. Day to day the tub shines as the star! The client also requested a kitty litter box cut into one side of the cabinet so we made the cabinetry look the same from front but on side next to toilet is a small cutout for kitty to enter and exit. The door opens to easily clean the box. The candle niches were cut into the back wall of tile to give some visual texture to the room. The flooring is 12x12 terrazzo tiles that work perfectly off the blue glass 6x12 tile on the back wall. The other walls are limestone. The countertops are blue lagos Ceasarstone. All in all, this bath really packs a powerful punch in a small space!

The design of the cabin began with the client’s discovery of an old mirror which had once been part of a hall tree. Painted In a rustic white finish, the orange pine walls of the cabin were painted by the homeowners on hand using a sock and rubbing paint with a light hand so that the knots would show clearly and you would achieve the look of a lime-washed wall. A custom vanity was fashioned to match the details on the antique mirror and a textured iron vessel sink sits atop. Polished nickel faucets, cast iron tub, and old fashioned toilet are from Herbeau. The antique French Iron bed was located on line and brought in from California. The peeling paint shows the layers of age with French blue, white and rust tones peeking through. An iron chandelier adorned with Strauss crystal and created by Schonbek hangs from the ceiling and matching sconces are fastened into the mirror. Located on a partially wooded lot in Elburn, Illinois, this home needed an eye-catching interior redo to match the unique period exterior. The residence was originally designed by Bow House, a company that reproduces the look of 300-year old bow roof Cape-Cod style homes. Since typical kitchens in old Cape Cod-style homes tend to run a bit small- or as some would like to say, cozy – this kitchen was in need of plenty of efficient storage to house a modern day family of three. Advance Design Studio, Ltd. was able to evaluate the kitchen’s adjacent spaces and determine that there were several walls that could be relocated to allow for more usable space in the kitchen. The refrigerator was moved to the newly excavated space and incorporated into a handsome dinette, an intimate banquette, and a new coffee bar area. This allowed for more countertop and prep space in the primary area of the kitchen. It now became possible to incorporate a ball and claw foot tub and a larger vanity in the elegant new full bath that was once just an adjacent guest powder room. Reclaimed vintage Chicago brick paver flooring was carefully installed in a herringbone pattern to give the space a truly unique touch and feel. And to top off this revamped redo, a handsome custom green-toned island with a distressed black walnut counter top graces the center of the room, the perfect final touch in this charming little kitchen.

By replumbing this old and leaky salvaged bathtub, as well as giving a thorough makeover to the room, transforming the modular shower into a fabulous new custom shower with skylight, a new built-in and integrated wainscoting, a new window and fresh paint this bathroom now elegantly serves all the clients bathing needs. The Johnson-Thompson House, built c. 1750, has the distinct title as being the oldest structure in Winchester. Many alterations were made over the years to keep up with the times, but most recently it had the great fortune to get just the right family who appreciated and capitalized on its legacy. From the newly installed pine floors with cut, hand driven nails to the authentic rustic plaster walls, to the original timber frame, this 300 year old Georgian farmhouse is a masterpiece of old and new. Together with the homeowners and Cummings Architects, Windhill Builders embarked on a journey to salvage all of the best from this home and recreate what had been lost over time. To celebrate its history and the stories within, rooms and details were preserved where possible, woodwork and paint colors painstakingly matched and blended; the hall and parlor refurbished; the three run open string staircase lovingly restored; and details like an authentic front door with period hinges masterfully created. To accommodate its modern day family an addition was constructed to house a brand new, farmhouse style kitchen with an oversized island topped with reclaimed oak and a unique backsplash fashioned out of brick that was sourced from the home itself. Bathrooms were added and upgraded, including a spa-like retreat in the master bath, but include features like a claw foot tub, a niche with exposed brick and a magnificent barn door, as nods to the past. Old farmhouses offer charm and character but usually need some careful changes to efficiently serve the needs of today’s families. This blended family of four desperately desired a master bath and walk-in closet in keeping with the exceptional features of the home. At the top of the list were a large shower, double vanity, and a private toilet area. They also requested additional storage for bathroom items. Windows, doorways could not be relocated, but certain nonloadbearing walls could be removed. Gorgeous antique flooring had to be patched where walls were removed without being noticeable. Original interior doors and woodwork were restored. Deep window sills give hints to the thick stone exterior walls. A local reproduction furniture maker with national accolades was the perfect choice for the cabinetry which was hand planed and hand finished the way furniture was built long ago. Even the wood tops on the beautiful dresser and bench were rich with dimension from these techniques. The legs on the double vanity were hand turned by Amish woodworkers to add to the farmhouse flair. Marble tops and tile as well as antique style fixtures were chosen to complement the classic look of everything else in the room. It was important to choose contractors and installers experienced in historic remodeling as the old systems had to be carefully updated. Every item on the wish list was achieved in this project from functional storage and a private water closet to every aesthetic detail desired.
