The owners of this stately 1903 Victorian home worked closely with Colleen Knowles Interior Design and Prestige Residential Construction to elevate each of the home’s four bathrooms.
The master bathroom echoes the curve of the large bow window, with the tub positioned in the window’s arch and surrounded by tree top vistas. The laser cut mosaic shower wall is a beautiful focal point that showcases a successful merging of style and craftsmanship. The dignified furniture-like walnut double vanity features white marble countertops, strategic storage, and elegant mirror-mounted sconce lighting.
Period-correct details were carried throughout the bathrooms on all three floors of the home. The jewelbox nature of the powder bath includes Brunschwig & Fils wallcovering, Phylrich Maison faucets, and a unique Calacatta Tucci polished counter and with metal console frame. The second floor guest bath includes additional period detailing, classic materials, and a soft color palate.
Special Construction Note: This project required a particularly high level of care to protect the home during construction. The new bathrooms spanned three floors and all were connected by a narrow, millwork-wrapped staircase. Prestige also managed a thoughtful sequencing to allow homeowner occupancy with at least one functional bath at all times.

THE SETUP
While the existing layout wasn’t inherently flawed, this primary bathroom felt outdated and lacked the desired aesthetic appeal for our client. The goal was to revitalize the space, catering to her refined taste while ensuring a bright, inviting ambiance. The client wanted a comfortable and classy gender-neutral design that would retain its updated look and have broad appeal for eventual resale.
Design Objectives:

Incorporate ample storage for towels, linens and an extensive hair care collection
Embrace a transitional design style that blends contemporary and classic elements
Establish a harmonious color palette that complements the home’s new black window frames
Ensure a future-proof design to maximize resale potential
Design Challenges:
Integrating a spacious shower within the existing layout
Ensuring accessible towel and robe storage near the shower and tub areas
Providing ample lighting and mirror space without cluttering the vanity area
Finding dedicated storage for hair care essentials and accessories
Maximizing linen storage while minimizing clutter
Decluttering the tub niche area
Tall angled ceiling almost too dramatic
THE RENEWED SPACE
Design Solutions:
Frameless glass shower enclosure with a recessed niche (in the half wall) for body care products
Strategically placed robe/towel hooks on shower glass facing shower and tub
Illuminated, oversized mirrors with integrated lighting
Multiple large pull-out drawers with electrical outlets in the vanity
Dedicated base cabinet with countertop for towel/linen storage and decor
Single, spacious tub niche for products and decorative accents
Subtle horizontal trim lines at standard ceiling height to visually ground the space

Classic meets Modern in this West Village historic home renovation! Preserving the character and architectural integrity of this home while updating it for this modern busy family, we infused the design with old world charm but make it hip. We started by ripping everything down to the studs, re-arranging the kitchen for a more open feel, adding an oversized accordion door facing the backyard, and adding a powder room where the hallway used to be.
The tiny powder room fit just inside of the pre-existing hallway, but served plenty of punch. Hand-painted lime wash walls with gold accenting done by Stevi Fourouli, enveloped the space, white the 3 walls surrounding the custom marble floating sink are pink bottaccino fluted marble. The oversized arteriors sconces and chandelier add drama to the space, while the mixed metal mirror bounces the light in the room.

Black faucets introduce contrast and depth, while gold cabinet hardware ties the look together with warmth and sophistication. This design is a testament to the perfect blend of style and function, proving that farmhouse aesthetics can be both classic and forward-thinking.

Faux-finished, glazed walls accent an Italian marble floor, wrought iron Mediterranean-style light fixtures, Phylrich satin-gold faucets, Edgar Berebi cabinet hardware and elegant accessories.
