Built in 1887 by Charles Burt Sumner, one of the founders of Pomona College, this Queen Anne-style Victorian home had fallen into neglect and disrepair. The College hired us to restore the home to its original grandeur in 1992. We even managed to uncover the original paint scheme and replicate the historic colors.

The island is a popular place to try a contrasting finish in a trendy color.
The key to creating an authentic Craftsman-styled kitchen is by embracing those details that embody hand-craftsmanship and hand-joinery. As a response to mass production and abundance of cheaply made goods, the craftsman design movement achieved prominence in the early 19900’s and recognized value in the work of the craftsman and artisan.
The handiwork of the cabinetmaker was idealized, and an appreciation for quality and craftsmanship was celebrated. Homes of this period were designed with an open, airy floor plan and a central hearth or gathering area. Woodwork and cabinetry became architectural focal points in warm, wood tones and joinery techniques were prominently featured.

The U-shaped kitchen is done up with a shade of white, which is broken aesthetically by a yellow wall adjoining a low seating area that has been incorporated into the kitchen. With open kitchens now being the preferred option to closed kitchen and the space being used increasingly for socializing with family and friends, the seating arrangement is intimate, with its throw cushions, yet does not come in the way of work being done in the kitchen.
The work triangle of the kitchen has been created such to ensure enough of working space and to prevent any cross contamination of sorts. The refrigerator has a dedicated alcove that also provides easy access from the dining room as well. Nothing like taking that dessert treat straight from the fridge to the table.
The backrest of the kitchen seat forms the beginning of a breakfast counter with seating placed in the dining room. This countertop has been designed specifically to turn down and form a seating bay for the elderly members of the family.

The American Craftsman style grew in popularity at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.
The style emphasized work done by hand over mass-production, keeping with a growing cultural ethos of that period. It focused on handmade, local and/or natural materials, simplicity and originality. Traditional Craftsman style homes would feature handcrafted stained or leaded glass, metalwork and wood. In 2017, the Craftsman is simplified and uncluttered but has kept its vigor for handcrafted, long-lasting elements.
Unpretentious and comfortable, Craftsman homes are often low-profile, one-and-a-half stories that could be part of the landscape.

Simply Home Decorating
The homeowners of this condo sought our assistance when downsizing from a large family home on Howe Sound to a small urban condo in Lower Lonsdale, North Vancouver. They asked us to incorporate many of their precious antiques and art pieces into the new design. Our challenges here were twofold; first, how to deal with the unconventional curved floor plan with vast South facing windows that provide a 180 degree view of downtown Vancouver, and second, how to successfully merge an eclectic collection of antique pieces into a modern setting. We began by updating most of their artwork with new matting and framing. We created a gallery effect by grouping like artwork together and displaying larger pieces on the sections of wall between the windows, lighting them with black wall sconces for a graphic effect. We re-upholstered their antique seating with more contemporary fabrics choices - a gray flannel on their Victorian fainting couch and a fun orange chenille animal print on their Louis style chairs. We selected black as an accent colour for many of the accessories as well as the dining room wall to give the space a sophisticated modern edge. The new pieces that we added, including the sofa, coffee table and dining light fixture are mid century inspired, bridging the gap between old and new. White walls and understated wallpaper provide the perfect backdrop for the colourful mix of antique pieces. Interior Design by Lori Steeves, Simply Home Decorating. Photos by Tracey Ayton Photography

This lovely Victorian house in Battersea was tired and dated before we opened it up and reconfigured the layout. We added a full width extension with Crittal doors to create an open plan kitchen/diner/play area for the family, and added a handsome deVOL shaker kitchen.
