This salvaged kitchen sink was found awhile ago by the client who new she wanted to use it if ever she renovated. Integrated beautifully into the Danby marble countertop and backsplash with new fixtures it is a real joy to clean up. This kitchen was formerly a dark paneled, cluttered, divided space with little natural light. By eliminating partitions and creating an open floorplan, as well as adding modern windows with traditional detailing, providing lovingly detailed built-ins for the clients extensive collection of beautiful dishes, and lightening up the color palette we were able to create a rather miraculous transformation. Photos by Deborah DeGraffenreid The architect went to great lengths to control moisture from the indoor pool from affecting the rest of the home: An ice & water shield was placed on the inside of the wall and ceiling assembly, preventing moisture from escaping and condensing into the wall and roof cavities. A Pool cover keeps humidity levels down while nobody is swimming. A Standard dehumidification system was used, which has been working fine with the other measures in place. Blower door tests were run twice to ensure that the building envelope was air tight. The pool room is under negative pressure, preventing the moisture from escaping into the rest of the house.

A charming 1920s colonial had a dated dark kitchen that was not in keeping with the historic charm of the home. The owners, who adored British design, wanted a kitchen that was spacious and storage friendly, with the feel of a classic English kitchen. Designer Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn helped her client, while architect Greg Lewis redesigned the home to accommodate a larger kitchen, new primary bath, mudroom, and butlers pantry.
